The Role
I really enjoyed the time in JPM. There were lots of new and interesting things happened. It was quite hard to start at the beginning, but later one after mid-term reivew and a few weekly meeting with my manager and team, they were very friendly and honest what they expect. They also provide me necessay guide when I need.
My team and other people I worked with told me what they thought directly. Their feedback was very objective. They encourage me when I did some work very well. At the same time, if I could have done something better, they would point out. When I had suggestions to the team, they are very open minded. They accepted them and kept on using the changes.
I had my manager, senior advisor, buddy and executive representative to support me. I had weekly intern summary with my manager. My buddy was free to see me whenever I need. I catched up with my senior advisor and executive representative a few times. They all listened to how I felt and then providded me suggestions, adivce and support. Whenever I felt lost, there was always someone availabe to approach to.
It really depended on. Sometimes I had lots to do and they were all urgent. Sometimes I was quite free especaily there were holidays in US. My work was not bored. I could still have been given much more work.
At beginning, I was given very simple and easy works, but later on my tasks were more and more challenging. My manager gave me a right push to let me try new things. It was challenging but I really learnt and developed a lot from that task. I had my own prjects, which was very benificial for the team. Although I felt like I could be given more responsibiliy. To be an owner, I tried very hard to get more work.
I think my professional communication skills definitely improved. Howevery I think 2-days training was too short to cover many essential knoweledge. It will be better to be a one-week training I suppose. My manager did not teach me much for the training couse. The online training central did not have enough courses or it was hard to find the right one for me.
The Company
It was quite releaxed. Everyone was very nice and friendly. When I had questions, I could always find someone to help me. However it seemed like people are more interacted with only their own team. If people are in different team, even they sit quite close to each other. There is not much chance for them to communicate with each other. Maybe more events should be hosted on the whole floor.
The welcome internship handbook was very well-organised. There were a lot of information inside. However for the admin issue, there was no guideline. It will be much better if they can provide us a brief explanation about what we can do for these very useful things, eg booking rooms. Also the timeline for the overall internship was quite unclear. Different managers seemed to know about the internship program differently. The weekly internship communication email was very useful.
The training at beginning was much shorter than I expected. I did not think 2 days covered most of the key information I needed to know before internship started. My manager did not spend much time to teach me. There were some online training which were not very useful. Some of the courses which were very essential, but only had class version. We could not join online. For internship, it was quite short and quite unlikly to attend class-based training.
Company Parties/Events
Working from home
It was good to get into JPM. There are too many things we can learn or pick up. The overall working atmosphere is very friendly. There are many ways to development individuals.
The Culture
There were a few intern events organised by HR. Most of the evetns were hosted by interns ourselves. The events were all quite interesting and useful to know different interns across different Line of Business.
It was quite expensive. Twice or three times more than daily cost in University.
During weekdays, there were lots of different places we can go, but during weekends, quite limited things near Canary Wharf. People normally go to central London or other cities to have fun.
There were a few diversity groups to join, but not many evetns were organised. Also different office locations limited the chances to attend.
