The Role
For the most part the placement was very enjoyable. The company has a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, and the work was challenging but engaging. The working hours are not too demanding and the flexi-time system allows you to work when you want, meaning that other activities can easily be fitted around work.
Most members of the company who I worked directly with were very prepaired to spend time explaining anything I didn't understand or needed help with. I found everyone respected my role in the company and was willing to give me responsibility that may sometimes have been witheld from a summer placement.
My managers were both approachable and friendly. They frequently checked up on how I was doing and were ready to offer support and guidance when it was required. Although they were frequently around, and worked very close to me I did not feel as if they were bearing down on me, or constantly checking up on my work when I didn't ask them to.
The first few weeks were quite slow, and I ahd to spend a bit of time bothering people for work. However after this initial slow patch the work picked up and I found that I had plenty to do withoutn being overstretched. I did not feel I was overworked as I was often asked to provide estimates myself for how long I thought a piece of work would take, and most deadlines were provided with an amount of flexibility.
A good level of responsibility was given to me. At times I felt that I was perhaps a little out of my depth, but the support was always there to back me up. There was a lot to learn in terms of supporting information and jargon so initially things were a little confusing and nerve wracking when something was asked of me. For the most part the resposibility I took on was down to what I felt comfortable doing.
I feel I have learned a lot of useful skills, especially in practical computer programming which was outside the scope of what I have done in my degree. I feel it has put me in a good position to continue working within the field, although there aren't many skills which will transfer back to my degree course.
The Company
The atmosphere was lively, fiendly and relaxed. Even people who I did not work directly were talkative and I did not feel over pressured by others.
There were a number of issues for the first few weeks in terms of organisation with myself and a few of the other summer placements. I felt they were not really ready for my arrival and it took a couple of weeks for me to recieve IT access, security clearance, car parking and to be assigned an adequate amount of work. Once these issues were resolved things improved massively. The company was also very helpful in assisting finding accommodation and seemed responsive to feedback given.
The company sent me on numerous courses to help me understand the company itself and the industry as a whole. I did not feel they were reluctant to spent time and money on the training, but a few of the courses would have been better if they had been given earlier ijn the placement.

If I decided to work within the industry I would very strongly consider working for MBDA. I found the company very supportive and enjoyable to work for. Their grad scheme, from what I have heard seeems very good, and a signing on bonus is awarded to summer placements if they are offered a graduate position. Bristol is a great city to live and work in despite the awful traffic, and I would strongly consider coming back.
The Culture
I was put in contact with the other summer placements once we all recieved an offer and 6 of us lived together. I got on very well with all the placements and had a good time. There are also a large number of young graduates at the company.
Prices in Bristol aren't too expensive, especially as numerous places offer 西瓜视频 discounts. It is cheaper out towards the office at Filton, but there are some serious sacrifices in terms of nighlife, shopping etc.
Around Filton itself (where the offices are) there is no night life. However during the placement I lived in Bristol centre which is busy every night and has a lot to offer.
There is a lot to do in Bristol, and the flexi time gives you plenty of time to do it. Cider festivals, salsa classes, multiple cinemas, loads of music bars, baloon festivals......
