Overview
This experience involved attending several talks about about the firm's practice areas (which included a mix of learning about the areas and actively partaking in case studies) and other key information about the firm (e.g., inclusion, pro bono and social impact). The remainder of the time was then spent predominantly completing tasks within your practice area for your Trainer to get a flavour for the work in that area. There was also a group challenge.
Skills
Learning to navigate professional corporate environments Time management (e.g., balancing group challenge with practice area work) as all work had to be completed within the office Networking skills Teamwork and general interpersonal communication skills
Business Insight
Very insightful to learn more about the business of the firm and it's strategy. In terms of potential roles available, it was very useful to gain more in depth understanding of the training contract and understand the seat allocation process.
Culture
Everyone was incredibly friendly and welcoming and seemed to genuinely get along with each other. The atmosphere was not cold, overly formal, or hierarchical and I was able to have great conversations with everyone from trainees to partners.
Your Impressions
Genuinely an incredibly enjoyable and fun two weeks, every person that I met both on the scheme and employees at the firm were all very friendly, but also intelligent and sociable. The scheme was also very well organised, with a super interesting range of talks which were all engaging and provided useful insight into the firm that you wouldn't otherwise be able to get. My trainee buddy and trainer were both excellent.
Yes
Application stage - make the most of the work experience section - don't treat it like a factual CV but explain how each of your experiences matches onto the assessment framework. Assessment centre stage - prepare thoroughly - they provide enough information about the interviews (case study, scenario) that you can quite easily go and find practice questions.
