Overview
As a Materials Metallurgist, my primary responsibility is to analyze and evaluate metal components to ensure their suitability for production and to investigate any failures. On a day-to-day basis, this involves preparing and examining samples through sectioning, microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). By closely inspecting microstructures, fracture surfaces, and material defects, I provide critical insights into the root causes of failures or confirm that materials meet the required standards. I collaborate closely with Quality Assurance and Engineering departments, supporting them by delivering technical expertise and data that guide product improvements, quality control, and process optimization. My work helps maintain high product reliability, minimize downtime, and ensure compliance with industry standards.
Skills
Sample Preparation: Developed proficiency in preparing metallurgical samples for analysis, including sectioning, mounting, polishing, and etching to reveal microstructures clearly. Microstructure Identification: Gained expertise in identifying various microstructures and correlating them with material properties and performance. Health and Safety: Enhanced knowledge of laboratory health and safety protocols, including the safe handling and acquisition of chemicals and equipment. I gained experience in preparing clear, detailed technical reports that communicate findings effectively to quality, engineering, and management teams. Proficient in presenting complex material science information and handling result data.
Responsibilities
Yes, I was given considerable responsibility during my placement. I was trusted to pilot the SEM microscope and operate other expensive, sensitive equipment, which gave me hands-on experience with advanced metallurgical analysis tools. Additionally, I was tasked with the procurement of new, costly equipment and consumables. After completing my training, I was entrusted to manage orders with minimal supervision, demonstrating reliability and attention to detail. I was also given the opportunity to lead my own projects aimed at increasing lab efficiency, which helped me develop project management skills and contribute directly to improving workflows.
Support & Guidance
I received a great deal of support throughout my placement, especially in the early stages as I was learning new techniques and equipment. The team was always approachable and willing to discuss findings or provide guidance when needed. At the same time, I was encouraged to work independently, allowing me to build confidence and take ownership of my projects. This balance of mentorship and autonomy helped me develop both my technical skills and problem-solving abilities.
Culture
The company culture was very much aligned with the Cummins motto, 鈥淩eady to Go.鈥 There was a strong focus on being proactive, solution-oriented, and collaborative. The atmosphere encouraged taking initiative while also valuing teamwork and open communication. Everyone was motivated to deliver high-quality results efficiently, and there was a real sense of shared purpose across departments. This positive and driven environment made it a great place to learn and contribute.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed my placement and found it to be a highly rewarding experience. Being able to work hands-on with advanced machinery has been a passion of mine that I was able to realize and further contribute directly to solving real-world problems made the role very engaging. I appreciated the mix of technical challenges and collaborative teamwork, which kept me motivated and constantly learning. The supportive environment and opportunities to take on responsibility also made it fulfilling both professionally and personally.
Yes
My advice to others applying to Cummins would be to fully apply yourself and take advantage of all the training opportunities available. Cummins not only lets you deepen your expertise in your field but also encourages you to diversify your skills. Make the most of the accessible training and the advice from experienced colleagues鈥攊t鈥檚 a great environment for growth. Within just one year, I was able to develop in ways that even surprised me, so stay open, be proactive, and you can go far here.
