Overview
Day to day, responsible for your own placement project, in partnership with a supervisor. Regularly interacting with cross-functional teams for support and input, and may be required to support both internal and external manufacturing projects. My main project follows this pattern: Independent literature research followed by consultation with supervisor, leading into structured laboratory work that guides decision making, and furthers research knowledge. Additional responsibilities such as event planning, meeting chairing etc can be undertaken.
Skills
Existing skills in engineering have been developed into readily applicable knowledge to a wide range of fields. Adaptability to novel technologies has become a key skill in my repertoire. My soft skills have been built on strongly - regular opportunities to communicate with key stakeholders, present findings to large audiences, and learn from experienced colleagues
Responsibilities
I was given key decision making responsibility in development of large scale drug manufacturing projects, feeding my findings from laboratory work directly to scale-up decisions. The combination of platform and support received allowed me to feel valued and accountable.
Support & Guidance
Weekly hour long catchups with a supervisor. Continuous support throughout the week from a group of colleagues with knowledge in the field. Broad range of lab equipment training. Support through mentorship to apply for numerous accreditations. Freedom to ask for support at any point where required. Cover arranged for supervision during annual leave periods. Managerial catchups, involving welfare and work check-ins.
Culture
Incredibly welcoming! The culture celebrates young talent, driving opportunity throughout. The broader company atmosphere is incredibly positive, with a great work-life balance, understanding of challenge faced and support to achieve in a productive manner. The office is a fast paced, dynamic environment, where plans routinely shift to accommodate change, but continuity is prioritised. Inclusivity is at the heart of the organisation, with multiple employee organisations allowing for diversity to be celebrated.
Your Impressions
Thoroughly enjoyed. At times the work was tough, challenging me to push my limits and make the effort to achieve at a high level. The connections I've made, experiences I've had and knowledge I've gathered have been entirely invaluable.
Yes
Take in every opportunity presented! Lots of things seem daunting at first due to the size of the company, but getting involved is the key to growth and enjoyment in your placement.
