    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Performing analytical testing on a variety of products / types of products. Required to perform testing using multiple analytical techniques such as HPLC, Mass Spectrometry, UV-Vis spectroscopy, dissolution etc. Also involved in regulatory work required as part of the development and release of drug products. Typically spend 20-40% of time preforming lab work, with the remainder of time used for writeups, documenting and personal development.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have had hands on experience with most key analytical techniques that were only taught on the theory side in undergraduate university study. These include, HPLC, MS, Dissolution etc. AstraZeneca also support 西瓜视频s to obtain the Registered Scientist award with RSC during work hours, which is a very useful award to obtain as an early career scientist. Personal development is also supported, allowing me to undertake optional learning and training modules to support my study/ career.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Training and reading SOPs takes some time at the beginning of placement, which was to be expected. However, soon after completing this and performing first laboratory work, I had shown competence to work effectively and safely when alone in the lab. AstraZeneca are very trusting of placement 西瓜视频s, meaning if the particular 西瓜视频 has shown competence they are trusted to complete high importance work almost instantly once their training has been completed. In terms of non lab based work, I was also trusted to support the release of regulatory documentation for drug products, helping build my understanding of requirements in drug development processes.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • Support by my industrial supervisor could not have been better. My particular supervisor was also a relatively recent graduate from the same university as me so they were able to support any assignments I had effectively, and offer advice. I am sure that the feedback and help received from my supervisor helped me to achieve a higher classification degree that I would have achieved by myself, as they enabled me to work to a higher standard. Even before I began my placement they reached out and were supportive in non work based things, helping with any issues I had with housing, travel etc.

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from your line manager?
  • 5/5

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?
  • 5/5

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Company culture was great, going into my placement I did not know what to expect as I had not worked in this industry/ for this size company before. I was therefore intimidated/ nervous about beginning. However straight away on my first day it was evident that others at the workplace were there to support and I did not feel like I was being watched / assessed all the time, as I was trusted to perform my work. The opportunities provide by AstraZeneca and connections you can make are also great when deciding on next steps after placement

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I couldn't have asked for / expected a better placement, all my needs / wants were met and I was supported in every aspect to succeed. They were great in supporting my study and ensuring I was able to achieve the highest grade possible, but they also allowed me to develop a variety of skills and gain experience in the industry, that I am sure will be crucial when I look to apply to roles extending beyond my placement/ university.

  • 7. Would you recommend AstraZeneca to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to AstraZeneca
  • For the interview process I would suggest to be yourself and you will do well, AstraZeneca look to employ people who are not only good scientists, but good people who have the right values that make them a good fit for the role, which is why their culture is so good. For people who are due to begin the placement I would suggest to not worry or feel stressed that you are going to be assessed at work, everyone I have met have been supportive and strive to help you improve as a scientist and an employee.
