Overview
I work in the PMO of a large transformation programme, where I hold key governance responsibilities including programme-level RAID management and change control. I support the successful delivery of multiple high-priority projects by creating reports, tracking progress, and a variety of other delivery tasks. My role is varied and hands-on, covering everything from chairing meetings and producing governance reports to capturing key actions and decisions, maintaining critical programme logs and driving progress across the programme.
Skills
I have learnt many new skills, most notably in project planning using Microsoft Project, as well as in identifying, managing and mitigating risks to name a few. I have also significantly enhanced my stakeholder management skills, through regular engagement with senior leaders across all parts of the organisation. In addition, I have built on my existing leadership and organisational skills by regularly chairing meetings, driving delivery progress, and effectively managing a wide variety of different responsibilities.
Responsibilities
I was given a significant level of responsibility within my placement year. I worked with a high degree of autonomy, and was entrusted with the ownership of several key governance responsibilities within the programme. This gave me a strong sense of satisfaction, knowing my work had a real impact on its success. I was also trusted to cover for a project manager on multiple occasions, and took the lead on several initiatives within projects, which provided me with incredibly valuable, hands-on project management experience.
Support & Guidance
I always felt very supported whilst working at Computacenter. I had excellent line managers throughout the placement year, who helped me settle in quickly and were always happy to help if I had any questions. Within the main programme I worked on, I was supported by a fantastic team and PMO lead who actively sought out opportunities to stretch my role and provide me with exposure to a variety of different activities.
Culture
One of the core values of Computacenter is understanding people matter, and this is clearly reflected in the friendly and supportive culture across the whole organisation. I have had the opportunity to work both remotely and in several different offices across the UK, and in every location, I was consistently impressed by and proud of the welcoming and positive attitude of the staff. I also built strong relationships within my immediate team and the wider programme, and through social events and team dinners, we developed a genuine sense of community.
Your Impressions
I have had a fantastic experience on this placement programme. From the high level of responsibility I was given to the relationships I have built and the wide range of new skills I have gained, I am genuinely proud to say that I worked at Computacenter. I especially enjoyed the regular travel to in-person events with my team, and I consistently felt that I was learning and developing my skills and capabilities - something which I value greatly.
Yes
My main advice to anyone applying to Computacenter is to be authentic and stay curious. An industrial placement is all about learning, developing, and applying the existing skills which you have gained from university and prior experiences. Always be inquisitive, and if you are unsure about something, take the initiative to research and learn about it, rather than just relying on someone else to do it for you. Being proactive, well prepared and genuinely engaged will stand you in good stead.
