Overview
Development in C# & C++ maintaining various systems related to flight simulators. Day-to-day tasking included fixing priority bugs, feature development and refactoring legacy systems to increase performance.
Skills
Large improvement in my general programming skill and ability to break down a problem. Production experience in a variety of frameworks and development techniques including dependency injection, test based development, mvvm, HLA (High Level Architecture) and Windows Presentation Foundation. SQL was also present in tasks involving certain systems.
Responsibilities
I received work of considerable size occasionally spanning multiple weeks. Much of these longer tasks I was trusted to work independently assuming that if I was in need of assistance I would ask. I occasionally received priority bugs that I was expected to complete quickly. I did not receive lower priority tasks relative to other team members and was treated like a regular engineer.
Support & Guidance
I received suitable support from colleagues and always felt I was able to ask questions if required. I received ample support from early careers involving any queries outside the scope of my day to day work.
Culture
Communication felt open with a sense of trust, no micromanagement. New ideas on tasks were welcomed and on several occasions I gave personal suggestions that were implemented. Work varied between time sensitive and slower tasks keeping a reasonable balance. Colleagues were always willing to support or answer questions in instances that required it even if busy.
Your Impressions
The worked matched exactly what I had wanted to do within software engineering, developing a strong technical and soft skill foundation across a variety of tasks and internal events. Everyone I encountered was pleasant with no standout negatives regarding the whole experience.
Yes
The diversity in work across the software discipline is large and I would encourage any applicants to take the opportunity to move around during their placement to develop a wider skillset and potentially expose a role that better aligns with them as an individual.
