Overview
This is dependant on placement area. BAE gives you the opportunity to rotate through three different placements - although this is an informal setup, and something you must align yourself, by contacting other teams etc. My first role was a project supervisor for the High Speed Wind Tunnels, and thus involved the management of testing there. My second role was a systems engineer for Fuel Systems, particularly looking at hardware integration. Finally, my third role, again was a systems engineer, this time working on Radar Systems.
Skills
New Skills I have developed: Working with international stakeholders, formal presenting, MATLAB/SIMULINK for aircraft system analysis, Networking. Skills that I have built on: Self Management, Communication, Working and Relating to Others, Applying Knowledge and Initiative, Ethical awareness.
Responsibilities
Much more responsibility than I would have ever imagined. In all 3 placement areas, I was given the same responsibility as a regular employee.
Support & Guidance
I was provided with ample support from each of my placement managers and teams - and could always go to them with questions and/or for guidance. Not as much support was received from the Early Careers team. We had forums every now and then but not to the level I'd expect.
Culture
BAE is built on a strong history and a a sense of pride in the work that they complete. As such was atmosphere was always inclusive and strong.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement year at BAE, and would recommend it to anyone. Obviously it depends on placement area, but to me this didn't feel like an internship - this felt like a real job with real world impact.
Yes
Have some knowledge in what projects BAE are involved in, and talk about one that really interests you. BAE is a proud company, make it known that you would take pride in working here - ultimately defending our Nation and Armed Forces
