Overview
Platform department has lots of project variety, including turbo performance investigations, parts shipping requests and writing technical reports for customer reviews. Test technology teams gives the opportunity to develop bash scripts, PLC program, develop HMI screens and overall work on system reliability, efficiency and usability. Each project requires different resources, including Microsoft Office applications, terminal-based programs or hands on testing. Lot's of opportunity to work in the office, in lab, or off site for outreach programs.
Skills
Strengthened technical skills relevant to my career path, including understanding devices used for electrical control, different computer systems and data acquisition tools used to monitor and control test data. Enhanced mentoring and presentation skills through community and inclusion initiatives (ERGs, volunteering, etc.). Gained broader insight into engineering industry through investigative projects, developing skills in stakeholder management, cross-functional communication adaptability and problem solving.
Responsibilities
I was given enough responsibility, especially in my last rotation with platform, having worked under many different early development and investigative projects. For example, I handled main testing requests, tracking their progress, settling internal deadlines to meet external expectations which meant coordinating with multiple teams. This fast paced environment was challenging at times, especially having prior experience and background unrelated to mechanical and business management work. These tasks did keep my placement engaging, and helped develop my time management, assertiveness and accountability skills.
Support & Guidance
At the beginning of placement, I received a lot of training which at times felt overwhelming as retaining the information for much later use was difficult to do. However, I found that everyone was willing to help regardless of their department, which made a big difference to the experience. There is always someone available for work related queries, university needs or personal matters.
Culture
There's a strong focus on inclusivity, ethics and community involvement, with many promoted initiatives such as joining an employee resource group or taking part in regular volunteering opportunities during work hours. These efforts create a very supportive and welcoming atmosphere and I'd highly recommend to new starters to get involved with these. It's a great way to build connections and learn about the company, beyond your allocated department.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed the variety of work across my teams, as well as the many opportunities to network. This helped my confidence in verbal and written communication, presentation skills and group setting adaptation. At times, placement was challenging, learning to manage workload with shifting project priorities or supervision changes, but I always found someone willing to guide me.
Yes
I would say most of the engineering placement departments is beneficial to those with a background or interest in mechanical, automotive or any other turbo tech related engineering. This will help with project understanding, variability and engagement. Cummins has a strong emphasis on how well you align with their core values - such as integrity, inclusion and community. Even if you're not completely aligned, showing a willingness to grow, learn and contribute is just as important as technical ability!
