    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Worked in systems engineering looking at different systems on the aircraft and their function. A lot of my work was around improving the safety of the systems via system analysis or looking at test data. I also got to take part in system specification. There was a lot of paper work that went a long with this.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Given a good amount of responsibility it can be hard for managers to determine what work you should get but I think they did a good job. A lot of the time I was assisting with a project but got to work independently with any work assigned. There where a couple of moments where I was leading work with assistance from more experienced team members.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I got an okay amount. If there was any questions I could ask either someone within the team and they'd normally get back by the end of the day or even within a couple of minutes. When it came to rotating placement there wasn't much guidance and it was a stab in the dark calling random managers and asking what their team does and if they have a position available. Additionally during the first placement where there was little work for the team I wasn't given much guidance for how to deal with that and the situation didn't improve until I rotated.

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from your line manager?
  • 4/5

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • For me things where laid back and pretty relaxed along with a lot of other team members. For team leads and managers it seems like meeting [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] with a lot of things going on which can mean it's hard for them to find time to communicate with you and assign work.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • It was okay. Nothing above and beyond and also not a complete waste of time. There was a lot of moments sitting around waiting and there where also moments where I was given a good amount of work and felt I was making meaningful contributions. The first placment I was in was not a good experience with the team as a whole having no work. Moving into my second placment things improved but towards the end things have slowed down a lot for me as managers and team leads appear to be swamped in other responsibilities providing no time for them to assign me work. The people I work with are very nice and good at their jobs I enjoyed some of the social stuff we did as well.
