Overview
I've been a rotated through several teams during my placement. Day-to-day work has consisted of design work, CAD, engineering drawings and occasional lab work. These have been used for a range of products for both customer and commercial products to test equipment. In addition, I have completed work both individually and in a team.
Skills
I have learnt a wealth of skills while on placement. These include tolerance analysis, design intent and formal documentation. I have also developed skills and knowledge learnt at university, such as 3D CAD modelling and Finite Element Analysis (FEA). Other skills developed include soft skills such as communication and being able to elaborate on concepts and ideas in a collaborative environment.
Responsibilities
Yes. I was given responsibility to liase with both customers and other team members when working on a project that had a tight deadline. I was also given the responsibility of using engineering judgement to make certain design choices on products and systems I worked on.
Support & Guidance
I received a lot of support and guidance during my placement when I was introduced to new software and/or concepts. If there was anything I didn't understand, I was able to draw from my peers and ask for constructive feedback once a task was completed to ensure I was able to produce work to the highest standard.
Culture
The company culture is friendly and open. General atmosphere is good too.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed my placement. I've been able to learn a lot in terms of skills and technical knowledge while working here. In terms of soft skills, I've become more confident in elaborating on my ideas in both my documentation and within a collaborative environment and during presentations. I've also been able to meet a lot of new people and branch out my network.
Yes
Be yourself and work hard. Take the time to meet new people and make the most out of your placement by constantly asking questions to build your knowledge.
