Overview
Team meetings to set direction and perform risk assessments. Producing CAD drawings to assist with planning permission, civil engineering and chemical process design. Providing Mechanical Engineering expertise on proposed solutions for chemical engineering processes.
Skills
Despite the role not advertising working on a chemical engineering project, I have spent the majority of my time assisting with the mechanical design aspects of a chemical engineering process. I have found this challenging but has given me an insight into an industry I would not previously have considered working in. My CAD and 3D design skills have greatly increased also.
Responsibilities
I was given sole responsibility for a handful of projects necessary to the project and primarily treated as a peer and valued for my mechanical engineering insight in a mostly chemical engineering environment.
Support & Guidance
Enough support and guidance was provided for most tasks. There were times of intermittent workload that support could not be provided for due to short-term timescales.
Culture
Company culture was overall positive but varied greatly from one department to another in terms of management style.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed the majority of aspects about my placement. The 4 day work week was welcome and suited my style of working; work from home opportunities were available but limited. The only aspects I did not enjoy were the management style of some of those in senior positions and the intermittent nature of the workload for my project.
Yes
The application process focused more on personal experiences rather than engineering knowledge. The job title advertised is likely to be too vague to determine day-to-day responsibilities due to security concerns.
