Overview
Each day involved a mix of talks, workshops, and networking. We attended panels with trainees and associates, joined practical skills sessions, and worked in groups on a case study simulating trainee tasks. These sessions not only built on our legal knowledge but also encouraged us to think critically and commercially. There were regular opportunities to ask questions and interact with people across the firm. I especially appreciated the open, welcoming environment and the chance to speak directly with legal professionals, which gave me a clearer picture of a solicitor’s role.
Skills
I developed both soft and hard skills during the scheme. I improved my commercial awareness through workshops and case study tasks that required understanding how legal advice fits into a business context. I also strengthened my communication and teamwork skills by working with other attendees on group activities and presenting our ideas. Speaking with professionals helped boost my confidence in networking, and the application session refined my understanding of what makes a strong legal CV.
Business Insight
Learning about the business and the different roles available was eye-opening. It became clear how much collaboration happens across departments, and how trainees play an active part in major transactions. Hearing from partners, associates, and business services staff helped me understand the wider structure of the firm and the variety of career paths available. It was especially interesting to see how legal work supports clients’ commercial objectives, and how lawyers must think beyond just the law.
Culture
The company culture felt genuinely supportive and inclusive from the moment we arrived. Everyone, from trainees to partners, was approachable and happy to share their experiences. There was a strong emphasis on collaboration, and no question ever felt too small or out of place. The firm encouraged curiosity and made us feel like our presence was valued. It was clear that A&O Shearman prioritises personal development, and the atmosphere throughout the scheme was both professional and welcoming.
