    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I enjoyed it very much, I was given a good induction including a visit to 'Go Ape' to help get to know all of the other interns that started at the same time as me. I felt like the whole experience helped to develop my engineering skills and ready me for a job after university.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • From the get go I was given real work to do in order for the team to meet their deadlines. I was under no impression that the work given to me was a time fill for my internship and felt like a fully fledged member of the team. I had weekly/daily meetings and catch ups with the people giving me work to discuss progress and whether I could help to reduce their workload - and in cases I was given senior engineers work in order to help free them up to do other things. There were 6 weekly review meetings in which my progress and attainment was discussed versus the teams goals

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was given full support by my supervisors - if I needed help I could either book a meeting with them, or I could walk to their desk and talk to them. It was a very relaxed environment and the management was friendly and approachable, so there were no problems with the latter option. Guidance in my work was provided in part by my supervisors, but mostly I was directed to the guidance documents the company transversals had produced which were mostly helpful and if not additional guidance was readily available.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I felt like I always had work to do and could easily work the 37 required hours a week. If I needed work to do having finished what was initially given to me all that was required was to go ask, and the team had lots of work on hand that I could keep working through. on the flip side if I felt I had too much work I was encouraged to say so that my work load could be reduced.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was responsible for high level checks on documents, four calculations which needed to be updated and sent for peer review within the company to a set deadline, multiple part maturity forms, presenting to people on work experience and for communication with transversal leads as well as attending change request meetings. I was also required to provide updates to all of the above following review comments.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The skills I mainly developed was an ability to communicate on a professional level - which helped me to get more out of conversations with lecturers and other academics. The internship also helped me to manage my time more effectively and made me make the most out of a full day, letting me maximise the full day and leave room for other activities.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere in the office was very relaxed, and all staff were approachable and happy to help in whatever I was doing with the intent to widen my knowledge of what they did within the company so I would know what to expect if I went to go work there after my internship. All levels of management were in the same office as the main staff, and everyone brings in cakes for their birthday and dress in casuals on a Friday.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The placement was organised for me by a dedicated HR team for early careers, the managers were briefed on what kind of work I should be given and were supported in review meetings, there were monthly catchups with the HR team and I found no flaws in the execution of the internship.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company provided a long list of online courses that I could take, and I was encouraged to spend 10% of my work day on doing them. apart from that there was no clear investment path in terms of training outside of the internship for professional development ont eh summer internship, however I know there are much more opportunities on the graduate scheme for CPD.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    National Travel

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    Healthcare/Dental

    5/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would very much like to work for the BAE Systems in the future, and the two summer internships I have completed only give me confidence that it would be a good working environment and would allow me to follow a structured pathway postgrad towards chartership. I was offered a job on the site in Barrow- in Furness which is where I completed my internship, however due to personal reasons had to decline. The company are helping me with an application towards a job in their Rochester business.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement 西瓜视频s/colleagues?
  • There were many social activated that went on throughout the internship, we played football and badminton weekly and also went drinking often in Barrow and the surrounding villages. We all went for a buffet lunch at 12 on a Friday after work finished, and occasionally went walking as a group in the lake district.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • For the internship I opted to live with some of the other interns and we each rented a room in 'contractor' furnished serviced apartments for 拢110 a week including a weekly cleaner and bills etc. Weekly food shop came to around 拢30, and the cost of a pint was between 2-3拢. Petrol was cheap.

    5/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • there was LOTS of karaoke, in which everyone in the surrounding area enjoyed to indulge in. The local pubs were always well attended, and there has been a lot of investment in the local restaurants and pubs to make them a nicer place to be. There was always a good range of ales/beers/gins etc.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were noticeboards at work with things to do. I personally got involved in a cricket team by talking to people at work who helped me to get in the team and playing weekly. There is plenty of football clubs to get involved with and there is multiple weekly badminton activities. A squash ladder also existed
