About You
I enjoyed every aspect of it. We got a very complete overview of how all the parts of J.P. Morgan fit together. I also liked the mix of presentations, group exercises, interaction with J.P. Morgan employees, and practical advice. Even though I was initially very nervous about the networking events, once I got out of my comfort zone I realized that everyone was very understanding and I enjoyed it a lot.
The people from J.P. Morgan we interacted with came to the networking events on a voluntary basis. I was very impressed that they took some time out of their busy schedules to meet with us and they were very approachable. Also, the program was very well adapted to out knowledge so it was neither too difficult nor too easy.
What stood out most to me was that from the beginning until the end, we were strongly encouraged to ask questions. Everyone was very open about answering to any doubts we had, even if it was the most basic question. We were also provided with extensive material if we wanted to go more in depth in the topics we had covered.
The Company
In general, we had many different activities and the schedule was always followed. The only thing I would improve is to increase the amount of time we could do work shadowing. It would be very interesting to instead of being assigned to one team, to be able to see different teams and different products.
It was great that we were told on the first day that the spring insight would be for us and that our behavior would not be observed or judged. Everyone could be themselves and be relaxed enough to ask any question without having the feeling that we are competing against one another.
J.P. Morgan hired a great trainer from AMT who explained us the basics of financial markets. He explained everything in a very understandable way and was very professional. We also heard a talk by Deborah Frances-White about public speaking. Although, it would have been great to do more practical activities to actively improve our skills.
By talking to people from J.P. Morgan I could gather some opinions about how it is like to work there. But, it is always more useful to experience it first hand. Since it was not an actual internship but only a spring insight, we were not given actual tasks. The best insight I got was when we were able to do work shadowing.
Culture is difficult to see from the outside but I definitely have now a general idea of what the culture at J.P. Morgan is like. It was great to talk to people at different levels, from many divisions, so that we could see how the company-wide culture is, and not just how it is in one specific part.
Everything Else
For those living outside of London (like me), we were provided with transportation of our choice (within a certain budget, and adequate for the distance to be traveled) and with accommodation. We each had our own room, which was great to relax after a long day and to do some preparations for the following day.
We had one general networking dinner, one senior networking lunch and work shadowing, during which we were also able to interact with other employees. Employees were very open and approached you as well, so it was a good atmosphere and very useful for us to learn more about the culture.
The networking was great but sometimes it was a bit awkward to be eating at the same time. For the senior networking lunch they advised us to quickly eat before it started but a senior joined our table before we could finish eating. He was however very nice and did not mind.
I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in the financial industry. Specifically the new finance for non-finance program is great for Î÷¹ÏÊÓƵs who have not yet studied finance. It is not necessary to have deep knowledge about financial markets beforehand, but you definitely need to have a strong interest and some basic knowledge can be very useful. I felt that my preparations helped me to make the most out of this experience.
