    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • The speakers, trainers and "tutors" are very inspirational people at J.P. Morgan (JPM) from who you can learn a lot, either on the technical side (markets' products, roles in certain divisions like Credit Risk, Capital Markets...) but also on the social side with several networking events where you can learn in depth what JPM can offer and what professionals think of the markets. We also had some practical experiments and shadowing (trading game, trading floor shadowing) which were definitely the highlights of this insight; on the other hand I feel this programme lacked a little bit of these work shadowings.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • I felt greatly valued and the organisers made everything so that I could network and spend time with my peers. They repeated a lot of times that the specialisation of the degree is not important, it is what you wish to do with that degree. There was a senior networking event and I really felt that these senior bankers took a bit of their valuable time for the company to speak with us and give us an insight of their routines/jobs. Hence, this Finance for Non-Finance Spring Week was definitely not a new "prototype" spring week.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • The three recruiters were open to answer any question regarding application processes for the Summer internships and were very helpful should we had any concern regarding the spring week or any other query.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The training from AMT was very good as the speaker was keen to explain complex products using terminology that is understandable by Î÷¹ÏÊÓƵs with a non-finance background. We also had some "personal development" courses where you explore your personality traits and how you can perform well in interviews. This was very valuable and helped me to understand myself better and what I look for in a job. The information was definitely relevant.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • We had a timetable at the beginning of the week which was followed seamlessly.

    5/5

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • As said before, the organisers made everything so that everyone could feel included; the bar night after the first day was decisive in making friends for the week and peer contacts. Again, I believe that we may have spent slightly too much time on the 31st floor for courses and not enjoyed more work shadowing, but I understand that this could have created some problems due to the Chinese Wall (this Spring Week is Markets+IBD). One suggestion would maybe at the end of the 2nd day ask for a preference for Markets/IBD for each of the interns and then split the class into 2 groups.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The spring week was organised so that the speakers were amongst the best in what they do. The training was top-class.

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • The main way to know how a full-time role with the firm would be was through networking events with current employees of the firm. The best way I've learned what I could expect from a job at JPM was thanks to the work shadowing on the trading floor (I was assigned to the convertibles desk). You can, during this time, actually learn what are the stakes of the job and what would be a "routine" day within this role. We only had 1.30h of work shadowing (I personally did 2h as I really liked it but the rest mainly did 1.30h following the timetable), and more would have significantly increased my understanding of the jobs at JPM.

  • 9. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?
  • You may have preconceptions about bankers but this insight was really an eye-opener about JPM's culture, and that social skills are as valued as technical skills. Being a "good person" is rewarded at JPM and all the employees I have met were inspirational and had clear processes of thought.

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • This insight is extremely helpful if you do not come from a "finance background". You can learn what different bankers at an investment bank actually do, whether you like it due to technical complexity or because it fits your personality well. As a matter of fact, this programme led me to consider to apply for a summer internship in markets at JPM (the IBD speakers were also wonderful, this is more personal), and hopefully shadow a desk with a complex product (e.g. derivatives or credit-like products).

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  • They don't remunerate you but if you live abroad (or more than a 1hr transport ride to the office) they reimburse the plane/transport and the accommodation.

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • There were many opportunities to network with employees from JPM, whether they started to work for the firm (so you can ask questions more related to how you can fit in an investment bank) as well as seniors who worked for years in sales & trading or investment banking.

    5/5

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • The networking opportunities were excellent. At the end of the first day, we went to a trendy bar/restaurant in Canary Wharf where I had the opportunity to network with peers from the programme. The following days we had networking events with juniors and seniors from JPM within the office. They were very open-minded to our questions and keen to answer them. I even met my phone interviewer!

    5/5

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • During the networking events, we could ask personal questions about time outside work.

    4/5

  • 15. Would you recommend this insight to a friend?
  • Yes I would. Fantastic opportunities to understand JPM's culture, jobs and to network with inspirational and smart people with very different backgrounds.
