The Role
I very much enjoyed my internship, however, I would say that I did find the first couple of weeks slightly overwhelming due to the huge amounts of information we were expected to process. We were given a lot of responsibility and therefore there was a lot to learn. However, once I became used to what I had to do and settled in, I really enjoyed my role and the internship.
I felt very welcome at the company, and the amount of effort and planning that went into the programme was very clear to see. From the very beginning my team were very welcoming and got me involved in additional projects they thought I might be interested in. Furthermore, I was invited to after work events like team dinners, which made me feel like a valued member of the team.
My line manager was very supportive and guided me through all of my queries. Although very busy, my manager would always find the time to schedule a weekly 1:1 discuss my progress and help me with my development. My wider team were also very supportive as well as the HR team.
Due to the large amount of information to process in a short space of time, I was very busy on a day-to-day basis and if there was a moment I had spare, I would ask my colleagues for some more work. During the internship, I did learn to manage my time more effectively, which meant that I did not feel as overwhelmed by the work.
I was given a lot more responsibility than I was expecting. I was given real ownership of projects and felt that I was very entrusted as an intern. The responsibility gave me the opportunity to demonstrate what I was capable of achieving and help me develop new skills such as project and stakeholder management.
I feel that the skills that I learnt at JP Morgan will really benefit me for life. I vastly developed my analytical and interpersonal skills, which will benefit me in any future career I choose. Organisational skills and project management will benefit me in my final year of university, as I now know how to manage me time more effectively.
The Company
The atmosphere at JP Morgan is very professional, and at a first outlook can seem very serious and almost cold. However, once you settle in, I soon realised that everyone is very friendly and very willing to help. The office is fast paced and very much follows the rule ‘work hard, play hard’.
I really cannot fault the organisation of this internship. The HR recruiters were extremely well organised and kept us well informed at every stage. JP Morgan organised a number of social events for the interns, as well as networking events and a speaker series. HR were quick to respond to any queries and I felt that I could approach them with any problems.
I felt very much invested in by JP Morgan. At the beginning of the internship, we had to complete several hours of training exercises online in order to be up to sped with banking procedures and regulations. I felt that this well prepared me for the coming weeks. We also had to complete a goal setting worksheet where we could outline our key goals and areas of development. The networking events were also another key demonstration of JP Morgan’s investment in the intern intake.

Company Parties/Events
The internship is a direct route onto the graduate programme and if you work hard and demonstrate your ability, you will most likely be recognised for this. JP Morgan effectively treats the internship as a prolonged interview so use the time to prove yourself to your manager and your wider network.
The Culture
There was a good social scene amongst the interns in the office, and we regularly went for lunch or drinks out after work.
I did not find the cost of living too high in Bournemouth. I felt that the salary more than catered for my needs and I was able to save some money in comparison to my friends who undertook internships in London. Rent was slighter higher than the UK average but nothing to extortionate.
I did not know the area of Bournemouth well before going there for my internship, but I was very pleasantly surprised. There is a really good nightlife, with a huge number of bars, pubs, restaurants and nightclubs. There is something there to suit everyone’s taste. The cost of going out and socialising was fairly reasonable, meaning I could do something most evenings.
There are a number of sports club to get involved and rounder’s was actively played by many employees throughout the summer months. There are a number of ‘BRGs’ (Business Resource Groups), which I personally got involved with.
