The Role
I study Economics at University and it was important for me to work in a market-orientated role. Each day was different and dictated by what was happening in the markets. This, coupled with working alongside some of the best in the industry, made the internship an enjoyable experience.
This is very much dependent on the team in which you work. If your team quickly get to know you and build trust with you, they will give you work that matters and is important. Personally i felt valued and was given an active role in meetings very early on.
Very much so. I had a weekly meeting with my manager to discuss areas of improvement and generally how I was performing. Everything is very transparent. In addition, the recruitment team are always there to answer any questions you have.
The Market-Risk internship involves rotating across two teams. Within each rotation I was given a project to work on that I presented at the end. Overall I was very busy, especially close to my project deadline, but this was definitely a positive thing for me.
Again this is dependent on the team you work in. If you build a good relationship with your manager early on and gain trust, you can be given a lot of responsibility early on.
The internship begins with a week of markets training. The quality of teaching was above and beyond what I had expected and it gave everyone a great foundation to build on. Learning from extremely intelligent people on the desk was a great opportunity and will help me with my Economics degree going forward.
The Company
Hard working and fast paced. The trading floor is a unique place to work. There are periods where the markets are quiet and little is happening - during these times people tend to chat and have a laugh. However, it is very clear when people are busy and the work ethic is extremely high.
Extremely well organised. There were a number of socials for all of the interns and regular presentations from senior members across the bank. On the first day you receive a timetable with all of the events for the internship and HR are really good at communicating throughout.
The investment in the interns was much more than I expected. 1 week of training at the start of the internship plus many other trainings such as excel and Bloomberg throughout the internship. Also hundreds of web-based trainings to complete online.

Within Market-Risk, very appealing. Interns are told on the final day of their internship as to whether they have been given a full-time offer.
The Culture
Regularly went out for drinks with other interns as well as socials set up by the recruitment team
London, fairly expensive. I lived in Canary Wharf, the social scene is a bit quieter than central London.
Bars were good but nightclubs located in central London (10 min tube from Canary Wharf)
Yes, sport clubs and societies ect.
