The Role
The placement was so well organised, with every effort made to ensure that the experience was the best it could be. The HR team were a credit to the company, and each day provided new challenges, networking opportunities, and real insights into the workings of the company.
Coming from a non-financial background, to start with my knowledge was a limiting factor. However, everyone I worked with was generous with their time and helped me learn a great deal. They appreciated my learning, and in return I was given more complex tasks. Each piece of work I completed was contributing to the existing work of the team, and everyone took the time to read and comment on it, offering appropriate praise or criticism. I was also encorporated into the social circle of the teams, which ensured conversation and work flowed well together.
I was very lucky in that, to start with, my managers were willing to teach me what I didn't know, and then build my tasks of that knowledge, ensuring my learning was structured and consolidated. Then, as my learning became more independent, they ensured we had regular meetings to discuss my progress. Everyone on the team was approachable and always able to offer valuable advice. HR were always on hand to offer a wider picture of our progress within the firm and the industry as a whole.
Work load varied from desk to desk, as did the type of work. However, the tasks required enough effort and were plentiful enough that there was rarely time to spare. I also made sure to self-assign tasks to increase my learning and contribution to the team, so that often resulted in working longer hours. However, the work was interesting enough that it was not a burden, and was thoroughly enjoyed.
All of my work was submitted to the team members, and often sent out on global mailing lists. Although sometimes checked by a superior before being sent out, all work had my name on, and therefore reflected upon myself and my managers. Many tasks were worked on just by myself, and this provided me with the opportunity to show my self-sufficiency.
This placement not only developed my professional interpersonal skills, but as I was learning in new styles, about new topics, it allowed me to adapt and hone my skills. Time management was vital, along with organisation, having to work on multiple pieces of work within overlapping time-frames. The connections made this summer will surely stand me in good stead for later life, as will the awareness found of the industry.
The Company
The trading floor had an amazing buzz, with it being intense and stimulating at the same time. JP Morgan facilities are unrivalled, and every effort is made to ensure your time there is as nice as possible. There is always chatter, and it's a very social firm, which again allows for networking and sharing of resources to get a job done. There is a wonderful feeling of teamwork, in that if you need to find an expert on a particular subject, there will be someone nearby willing to offer their help.
From the second I applied for the internship, all the way to receiving my job offer, the Hr communications have been brilliant. Information was clear, succinct and sent out at the correct times, and so much effort had been made to allow us to make the most of our time at the firm. We were offered such amazing senior networking opportunities and social events, and they worked hard to show off every aspect of the company. This lead to a good awareness of the firm's identity, but also of the different roles within the building, helping us to understand where we, as interns, fitted in.
Before we started we were offered amazing online training, with a multitude of resources and tasks. This was then followed by a week of training with tutors in London, which was both enjoyable and interesting. The firm used is clearly one of the best out there. Continuing with learning, we were given access to the firmwide online learning platform, which showed us how much the company invest in the continual education of their employees. We were offered such a fantastic range of events and opportunities, allowing us to develop our networking skills and gain a real insight into the company by talking to superiors.

Not only did this placement convince me that I wanted to pursue a career in market risk, but it also made me very aware that the best place to do that was JP Morgan. Based on my experience over the summer, and through talking to so many current and past employees, everyone agrees that it is a fantastic place to work. I can't wait to work with JPMorgan in the future.
The Culture
I struck up strong friendships with many of the interns and we had a flourishing social life. The work was hard, but at the end of the day, there was always someone there to talk to you about it or to let your hair down with. I was also lucky enough to have social experiences with my colleagues, ranging from drinks to dinners. It struck me as a very healthy work environment, with very well balanced people.
Working and living in London is certainly expensive, however within Canary Wharf, many bars and restaurants offer competitive pricing. This, combined with the generous pay meant that money was never a limiting factor when it came to my social life. There are also so many different types of housing opportunities in London, that any budget could be catered for.
Both in terms of bars and clubs, London is unrivalled. Most nights I was able to have after work drinks with colleagues and friends, and the tube network ensured this could quickly turn into a night out in a club.
JP Morgan has many social and sporting opportunities as a firm, along with volunteering programmes. London as a city has everything you could want, and if I had more free time, I know that I could have persuaded any activity I wanted to.
