The Role
I really enjoyed the summer at J.P. Morgan for many reasons. First of all, was it the job I always wanted to have so I was really happy to go into this building every day. Second, you learn a lot throughout the internship and third, the team and the people were just amazing!
My supervisor / mentor was very supportive throughout the whole internship. Not only did she feel responsible for my experience but also for my development. She took a lot of time to show me all the internal processes and to explain all the work related tasks. Also, she was always happy to provide useful feedback.
It was very cyclical over the summer. While the first weeks of the internship were intense and the whole team was very busy, the level of work declined at some point. I feel that was a good mix, so we had a great experience and extreme learning curve at the beginning and then had some time at the end to get to know the people.
The responsibility we were giving is obviously not really high. But in my view that is completely understandable given the magnitude of decisions and actions that are taken every day. You do earn some responsibility in admin tasks over time, but the client contact etc. will still be left to the seniors.
The Company
The atmosphere is very hard to get in the beginning. You have a lot of different characters sitting next to each on a big floor. I would say it strongly depends on your team, but speaking for my team only we had a lot of fun and generally a very positive atmosphere. Nevertheless, people are also focused most of the time.
The set up was very professional and well prepared. Not only is the team itself prepared to take interns over the summer, as most of them have been an intern themselves, but also the J.P. Morgan Campus Recruiting team puts a lot of efforts to support the interns throughout the internship. Social events are organized and always a lot of fun!
J.P. Morgan is definitely a very good future employer for everyone. The prospects within the firm are great, if you perform well on the job. Internal mobility, locationwise and teamwise, is very much appreciated within the firm and training basically never stops. As you progress you will learn a lot of different things and develop many different skills.
The Culture
As in every place, I did not get along with everyone but with some I did very well. The good thing at J.P. Morgan is that due to its size you will always have a lot of fellow colleagues who you will have fun with and who you will become very good friends with. With the social events furthermore they manage to provide a lot of time with the whole intern year.
I think it is not a secret that London is a comparably expensive place in Europe. Nevertheless, Canary Wharf can be considered a reasonable area in terms of rent and living expenses. Especially since the summer analysts in London are paid only slightly less than the analysts, so socialising is definitely affordable. Also, there are a lot of company events that try to establish a positive and strong culture.
In Canary Wharf you will not find many places to go out after work except for some bars. But still London is such a big city and has a lot of hot spots for nightlife. From Canary Wharf for example it is only a 15 min auto ride to Shoreditch, a very young neighborhood with a lot of pubs, bars and clubs.
