The Role
The work placement at J.P Morgan was extremely well structured and organised which in turn made it very enjoyable. I met lots of great people and had the chance to do some cool work and even play volleyball in the middle of Canary Wharf! :)
I was in an excellent team of very smart developers and the work I did was wanted by a lot of people and I needed to converse with many people about the work I was doing. This lead to me being very respected by peers and I was often involved in high level design choices. I even was asked to help other developers use the newer frameworks that I was using
Absolutely excellent. My manager and mentor that were directly involved in the project were extremely helpful and always around to support me and guide me in design and implementation. Eventually this relationship became mutual and we worked together like any other colleagues and this was a great pleasure.
Days were often split up with meetings, presentations, talks, lunch breaks and other company related things that meant we were never stuck at the desk all day.
I was given a project that I more or less had a lot of control over, with guidance as to how things might be best to move forward.
I expanded my technology skillset a lot which I was happy about and I learnt some aspects of the banking industry.
The Company
The office was full of great developers of all ages that bith helped me directly and indirectly. I played some sport with a team of colleagues and the atmosphere was such that I could feel comfortable to approach almost anyone. People often left treats that others could help themselves to and invites for demos of work were often.
The internship was very well organised and set up. When you started the program was such that you knew what was happening and you knew what the schedules were. This continued throughout the placement. This well organised structure of the placement made everything very stress free and enjoyable and the recruitment contacts were always available and were amazing help.
There was lots of training relating to security and legal things relating to the bank however these were a little boring and hindered work a little. In terms of technology training, there wasn't much. It was more of a hit the ground running kind of show. However as the mentors were very helpful, this counted as training more or less. This gave independence but support.

Career progression in the company are very clear and are an attractive prospect. You can soeak to more senior members and they will all explain to you the processes very openly. It is clear that if you stay with the bank and progress and invest yourself then it only becomes a better place to work as you build your network and become more relied on.
The Culture
The social scene amongst interns was very good. There were three social events planned throughout the internship which were great with good food and drink flowing all night. It was great to network with other interns across different lines of business and also enjoy social time outside of work other than just your office colleagues.
London is quite expensive but it is not completely bad. There are lots of great choice and availability with good prices.
London had great nightlife. Lots of bars and clubs and pubs that have great food and drink and the canary wharf scene in particular has a great selection with a massive mall right on the square! Everything you could possibly want or need is at canary wharf and many evenings after work were spent there.
The company advertised everything very clearly that happened outside of work. There was an ongoing coding platform that was bith a game and learning experience that we could access outside of work. There were charity running events advertised and as I mentioned I played vollyball, tennis and football with colleagues from the office
