The Role
I have really enjoyed my internship so far. I like the work that I do and feel as though I was given a lot of responsibility early on in my internship. I also felt as though there was a good calendar of social and team events that allowed me to bond with all the other interns.
I feel as though I am a valued member of the team. I am included in all correspondence such as emails, calls and team meetings and this is important to me as I can stay in the loop and feel like an ordinary member of staff. While being trained everyone also took the time to ensure I understood how the tasks I would be completing supported the team.
I have been given an amazing amount of support. Everyone has been so happy to explain things to me and whenever I have difficulties I feel confident messaging other team members who are never dismissive. Not only am I given support when I ask but I feel as though my managers are invested in my development and suggest things that may be useful for me not only to support the team but for my own personal growth.
I was pretty busy. I enjoyed having daily bau which I could work through independently and manage my own time. I was certainly never bored however some days I would say I was slightly too busy if I had talk or catch ups with people planned as well. On the whole I am happy with the amount of workload I was given.
I was given a lot of responsibility. As the internship progressed my team were happy for me to send files to other departments without having them checked and speak to the traders independently. Also I was given responsibility over CDO risk which is one of the teams core responsibilities. Furthermore, the responsibility I was given was never taken away from me if I made a mistake which I valued. Although I was given a lot of responsibility there are still aspects of the teams responsibilities which I haven't worked on so there is room for me to continue to develop if I was offered a place on the graduate scheme.
My excel skills have been vastly improved which I believe will be a huge help when it comes to my dissertation. One valuable skill I have also learnt is to think of my long term development other than short term gain, so I based my final year university course choices with this in mind rather than choosing courses that are likely to just give me the best grade. I have also vastly improved my time management and communication skills which I believe will benefit me massively throughout my life.
The Company
The atmosphere was very friendly and relaxed. I did find the office very quiet so I was conscious that everyone may be able to listen when having conversations however this wasn't an issue just something that I noticed. I got the impression that most people enjoyed working there and being part of the team.
I think the internship was very well organised. As said previously I think there was a nice mix of work and social events. I also enjoyed the talks that gave us an overview of the other areas within finance and networking opportunities. Things I would also have liked are a social event only for the finance interns and to have known further in advance how to prepare for the specific team I would be placed in. I think the pre-internship training provided was excellent however it would have been good to have found out what team I was in slightly earlier and what products they deal with so I could have prepared for this more in depth.
The firm provided an excel course for us which was extremely beneficial. I have also attended a course on Credit Markets. Although the main investment comes from the people in my team who have invested a lot of time teaching me processes and having one-on-one sessions to improve my product knowledge.

I think the future prospects seem extremely appealing. We have learn a lot about the grad scheme which sounds like a very well organised programme that would allow us to receive a qualification and experience working in three different rotations within finance. The opportunities for promotion and mobility are also appealing. The firm has a good reputation and somewhere I would feel proud to work. There is also the opportunity to work in locations all over the world.
The Culture
There was a really good social scene. This was a combination of both organised events by Campus Recruitment and the fact that everyone on the programme was every sociable and friendly. I think it added to this that we were not made to feel as though we were in competition with each other for places.
Expensive! Rent and transport were exceptionally expensive. Then everything else such as going out and food was also overpriced. I think this was one of the biggest downfalls for living here although it was to be expected given the city. Luckily we were paid well which helped with this.
The nightlife was again expensive so although there was a lot of choice it was difficult to enjoy a good night out without being conscious of the price.
The firm had lots of sports teams which I got involved with. I'm sure there are loads of clubs in London outside of work but given the short duration of the internship, this wasn't something I did personally. There was always cool pop-up's and fun things going on in London at the weekends though!
