The Role
Good combination of learning, being challenged, having an opportunity to contribute, experiencing the corporate structure. Quite intense, rarely boring, without being overly taxing. Good variety of things to work on, whilst having a clear underlying focus for the summer. Wish more time had been spent learning raw skills, and feel this would have maximized my output.
I was clearly less experienced than many of my colleagues, however people still valued my opinion and insight. They took to time to explain and to engage with me. I was entrusted with important tasks that challenged me, and people respected my time as being valuable. They took care to engage with the work I produced, and provided useful, constructive criticism.
At times I felt quite isolated from the project, and though happy to work independently I did occasionally feel quite directionless. At other times I was working under the instruction of two different bosses, and found it tricky to balance their often conflicting goals. A more explicit statement of the project goal, and explanation of hierarchy would have been useful.
Typically hours were from 8.45 until 6, though quite often I would work later than that. I personally would have benefitted from greater independence in choosing hours to work, but appreciate how difficult this is to implement. I appreciated how few meetings and how little bureaucracy there was, and 90% of the time was simply programming.
I was assigned a project and given a lot of lassitude in completing it. I was frustrated by the fact that we never actually saw the project brief, but enjoyed how much we could evolve our strategy for dealing with a very open ended problem. There was a lot of room to debate and discuss, and I felt my arguments were being assessed on their merit.
Effectively developed my skills at the same pace I would have spending ten weeks just programming by myself. While there were people who were fantastic to talk to, there wasn't much room to ask them to explain and to teach. I wish there more official sessions for learning raw skills
The Company
General atmosphere was friendly and helpful.
Organization and administration was surprisingly slick, and events consistently felt well-organized. Little time was wasted in pointless bureaucracy, and a high percentage of talks and events felt very useful. Onboarding was a little tedious, but not ridiculously so. The online training could have been sharpened, as much of it felt unnecessary and irrelevant to my work.
Given lots of independence and direction, but little direct training.
Prestigious company, that clearly values bright people and meritocratic promotion. Difficult to move out of the team you're initially placed within. Easy and simple to find a talk to people all along the career ladder. Long-term prospects are tricky to assess, as it seems to be highly variable. Would appreciate greater transparency about wages and prospects.
