    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I enjoyed it very much. As a company running the internship program for years, JPMorgan really knows what they are doing. They have provided interns with more than enough opportunities to learn and develop. I think enjoying a job in software development more or less depends on the particular project and team too, so I feel lucky I had an amazing experience with both of these.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Very much so. I was working on a project with another intern where we had a great degree of freedom. Therefore, I felt valued as I could provide my input for the project. It was not like them telling us "you should do that, because we know better". At the same time of course, we were being advised and helped throughout development, so it was basically the perfect balance.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • There are so many points of contact they provide you with in case you need support. There's your manager first, who in my case was an amazing individual. He was often busy though, but then there is the whole team to help you with anything you might need. You also have a technical mentor who you can turn to for guidance with technologies, and a buddy who's a more informal connection, so you can talk about basically anything.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Quite busy as I was eager to do a good job with the project I was assigned on, but it's not like we had a deadline, so you don't feel pressured, which is good for an intern. It was more about a personal desire to show my skills. Also, there are often meetings or other intern panels, which make it feel less busy.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was not responsible for anything crucial, but, as mentioned, we had a lot of freedom with the project we were working on, so I feel quite good about this.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • They most certainly will be helpful. I learned new technologies, which are quite popular, but I have never used before, so this will definitely assist my personal development. Also you get to experience working in an agile team with all that goes with it - daily stand-ups, scrum meetings, pair programming etc. It's pretty cool.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Again, it probably depends on the team, but I felt perfectly good as part of mine. People were very cheerful and there were always jokes and laughs going around. At the same time, they were serious professionals you can learn from. Also, it's worth noting there are 80 interns or so in total, so you can always go chat with someone for a wee break. And lunch time was certainly a party.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Very well organised. There is a dedicated team of HR who works so that all intern-related events go smoothly. They are also another point of contact you can turn to throughout the internship. They even hold drop-in sessions and, say, if you don't feel good in your team, you could talk to them about it.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • They truly did. As employees, we have access to this website for online tutorials and it's very good. I used it to learn quite a few things and it's paid otherwise. Quite similarly, we had access to a website for learning to code securely, which is also paid otherwise. So I feel like they invest a lot in us learning.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Financial Bonus

    Company Parties/Events

    Above 25 days holiday

    Healthcare/Dental

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • At the end of your internship, if you have been doing well, they will most probably offer you a place in their graduate program, which lasts for 2 years and is a perfect way to start your career.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement Î÷¹ÏÊÓƵs/colleagues?
  • Most definitely. When you have as many as 80 young interns in the same place, you can expect that there is always something going on, To begin with, lunch is always funny. Then we organised a lot of other things such as parties, dinners, paintball etc. And there were events organised by the company too such as bowling and keilidh.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Glasgow is not too expensive, say, in comparison with London or Edinburgh. Going out might still be expensive depending on what you allow yourself, but it's ok in general. Renting a place to live in for summer is definitely not a problem. And interns get a relocation bonus to help them with it.

    5/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Glasgow has tons of clubs and places to go out to. All sorts of them too. It's famous for its good night scene.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes, especially with interns. But then teams would also organize some sorts of building for themselves, which is pretty cool too.
