The Role
I have thoroughly enjoyed being a summer intern at JP Morgan. My team has been supportive and everyone is approachable and happy to answer any questions you may have. I have learnt a huge amount about office procedures, Credit Risk and developed transferable skills that will help my in my future career.
I have met very friendly and nice colleagues that you can build relationships with both inside and outside of a working environment. There are plenty of social events/team events organised for you to get to know you colleagues and other interns, with 3 events for all interns within JP, plus additional ones organised by teams or individual departments.
My manager and team have been extremely supportive throughout the internship, always being approachable and taking time out to catch up on how I am doing and to assist me and provide me with advice should I need it. I have had weekly catch ups with my manager, and people on my team are always around for me to talk to.
The work varies day to day, as does the intensity and quantity. There was never a dull moment as I was always working on at least 2/3 projects at a time, meaning I maximised my time and opportunities to learn and act on feedback from projects. Lengths of projects vary from taking 1 day, to weeks. I also developed my multi-tasking skills, and ability to understand and learn quickly.
I have been given plenty of responsibility and truly feel that I am contributing to my team and helping my colleagues. I have been responsible for working collaboratively on projects with members of my team, as well as being assigned individual tasks, all of which are material and contribute towards the output of my team.
I have developed many transferable skills, such as: communication, analytical, interpersonal, presentation, excel, teamwork and much more. There is a week of training at the start of the internship where you are taught the technical knowledge required for the job, and the rest of the development is during your day to day tasks where you will have the opportunity to put this knowledge into practice.
The Company
The internship has been very well organised, as we started the internship with 1 week of external training in which we learnt the basic technical knowledge required. We were also given a timetable of all the key dates and events/deadlines on the first day so we were aware of the structure and could prepare ourselves accordingly.
We had one week of external training at the start of the internship which was very helpful; mainly on excel modelling and the basics of investment banking. We also had trainings organised for us throughout the internship to provide us with the knowledge required for the desk job, which has been very helpful day to day.
The Culture
London is expensive to live in, as rental prices are high especially if you want to live close to the office. Food and drink is expensive too locally, but if you look in the right places you can find cheaper alternatives. However, you are paid by the firm for the internship which makes it easier to afford the prices of goods in London.
We had the opportunity to take part in the corporate challenge - a 5.6 km run though Battersea bark with colleagues from the bank and people from other companies across London too. We also had a corporate responsibility day where we gave back to the community and there were plenty of social events organised for us too throughout the internship which were very enjoyable.
