    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my work placement at J.P. Morgan because the interns here were treated not only as members of the team, but also had contact to senior leaders within the department and wider company. There was a mix between a professional and friendly atmosphere, and we were given a mixture of business as usual/day-to-day tasks and project work so we could understand what it would really be like to work here full time. The idea of the internship was not only focussed around whether the company felt we were right for them, but they gave us the opportunity to discover whether this position and company was right for us as they were very understanding of the fact that this was the beginning of our career.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt very valued by my colleagues. The people within my team including my manager and my manager's manager spoke to me like a part of the team and as if I had been here for months, not just weeks. They were always happy to tell me how I was doing and to provide feedback so I could improve, but also let me know when I was doing something well. They also gave me tasks such as a project that has a real impact on things so they valued my input and my project and gave me something meaningful to do with my time here.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was given a lot of support from everyone here. The graduates and buddy system was really helpful as we were offered help from people who were only around a year or so older than us and these are people who were in our position last year, so would know exactly the kind of help we needed. There were at least weekly catch ups with supervisors, mentors and my manager to see progress and to talk through any issues and problems.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • There were times where I was very busy trying to perform my business as usual tasks as well as manage and complete my own project but I didn't work any extra hours. We were told to work efficiently so as to get it done but still leave at a good time. It was also nice that in quieter times, I could participate in other things I was interested in that was not directly related to my job role such as participating in activities for business resource groups.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given quite a lot of responsibility during my placement as I had a project to run myself and get done during my time here. Business as usual tasks weren't as much responsibility but it was very flexible - our internship was what we wanted it to be as if we wanted more work and responsibility, they were always happy to accommodate that for us.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The skills I developed while working here will definitely help me with my degree studies and potentially in my career after. I took part in excel training courses and others. Having a project to manage and complete by myself meant I learnt a lot about time and people management, with time management being the most crucial in terms of helping my studies with a dissertation to do next year. Finally, I was given a lot of help and advice from senior members on presenting as this is something I get very nervous over, but was allowed to practice often.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere was a very good balance as it had a mixture of professional and friendly. The professional part allowed you to complete your work and have a good working environment around you that was usually quiet. It was also very friendly though which is very helpful in order to talk to others. As an intern it is often quite daunting having to talk to people who are very senior, but the atmosphere meant that everyone seemed approachable and they were.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was very well organised, with events such as lunch and learns with senior speakers all set up beforehand. Before I started the internship, I was also contacted by my manager so they could introduce themselves but also partly explain the area of work I would be in which allowed me to do some research before I arrived. The only issue was not having access to a computer on the first day in the office because of problems logging in.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company invested a lot in training and developing us. We were given lots of training courses and were asked our weaknesses at the beginning of the internship. They allowed us to try and develop these weaker areas and also focus on our strengths and develop those further too. We had various networking events with senior leaders who gave us advice, formally and informally on careers, areas to work in, also in our studies. They really tried to make us stronger individuals and to excel during our time here and after.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Above 25 days holiday

    Healthcare/Dental

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • During our internship we were given a mid internship and end of internship review where we were given lots of feedback on what we had been doing here, and our manager would give us our strengths and a few points to develop. Although the graduate scheme and full time offers are very competitive, we were told that if we work hard and do well and improve the development points, we would be offered a permanent place with the firm.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement Î÷¹ÏÊÓƵs/colleagues?
  • There were a few formal social events organised by the company that allowed interns within my department to socialise but also a few events such as the induction day, mid internship and end of internship social that allowed all of the summer interns from every department to meet and socialise together. There were also a few informal social events between the interns and graduates such as going to restaurants for dinner and drinks so we could all get to know each other a bit better.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • London is known to be quite expensive but we were given some relocation expenses if eligible that would help with the cost of living/travelling that more than covered our needs. Social events that were organised by the company were also paid for by the company so costs were not a problem here. The other important thing in London is that a lot of shops and restaurants have Î÷¹ÏÊÓƵ discounts that the interns could receive, and a lot of the bars have hours where things would be cheaper after work.

    5/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The night life in London is really great. Most Friday evenings, people from work would be visiting restaurants or bars. There are also lots of alternative events for people who don't drink alcohol such as cinemas that are open with late hours on Fridays and weekends, lots of street food pop-ups after work and lots of other one-off activities.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Our internship was our responsibility to shape - we weren't overloaded with work that we couldn't do anything else within the company. There are lots of events that the interns wanted to get involved with during their time here and lots of opportunities to organise and create events with business resource groups. If we needed some time during working hours to do activities that were not our business as usual tasks,. if our managers knew and understood what we were doing, they were more than happy to give you time to do these things.
