    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I was Summer Analyst 2017 in JP Morgan Chase Bank, London. The entire 10 weeks of the internship was a great experience to learn from the best peers in the financial space. The 10 weeks were packed busy and really well placed and structured. I met a lot many people from various areas of the bank and various lines of businesses. Apart from that I also met other interns from all over UK and Europe and working across multiple lines of businesses in the bank.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My team in the bank comprised of 5 people, with 1 Exec Director, 2 VPs and 2 other analysts. I joined the team around there most busiest times, producing reports and capital numbers for all the stakeholders. Despite them being incredible busy with in their own work, they had time for me. They regularly spend time with me to go through what the team does and how their work contributes to the business in the firm. The work I did was very key to the processes in the team and my team regularly made me feel important by highlighting the value of the work which I was doing. They appreciated me highly because I not only delivered all my goals before time, I managed to more value to the team by doing additional work which was not assigned to me.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager was a VP and despite having a hectic schedule, managed to spend 1 hour weekly, to understand my concerns and my feedback regarding my work. Apart from my weekly meeting updates, we also had informal chats concerning my future (inside and outside the firm), my further education and building my network within the firm. He encouraged me to speak to multiple teams outside my direct line of work to get a better understanding of all the businesses that firm does. My manager, apart from all this, met monthly with me to get an update on the progress of my project and any roadblocks I had to complete everything on time.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • 10 week is a very short time to gather knowledge on all the businesses a firm like JP Morgan operates in. But our 10 weeks in the firm, was really structured and well maintained to get a flavour of the bank and people inside the bank. We has a lot of networking events as well, which helped us make networks inside the firm and widen our understanding of the firm. My team was on tight deadline during the initial 6 weeks of the internship, so the hours were a little tight. But post that, it was like any other firm or a bank. But despite the hectic schedule during 1st half of my internship, I enjoyed every-day thoroughly.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given multiple objectives during the 10 weeks of my internship, which comprised of creating multiple process documentations for the team, creating reports (capital resources) from various data sources, conducting controls testing for all the reporting standards and work with external consultants for firm valuation, taxation and capital resource allocation. This gave me an amazing opportunity to work with people with various different work functions within the firm and even people outside.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The internship was intended for me to develop multiple skills during the 10 weeks in the bank. It honed me especially in my partnership and communicational skills as I collaborated with multiple teams. I internship also helped better my analytical and technical skills, to develop an organized and logical approach to work. Working in the bank, developed my commercial acumen, with better understanding of broader contexts in which the bank worked & the risks for self and business. The entire experience increased my career motivation, interest and enthusiasm to come and work for the bank full-time.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The general atmosphere in the bank is really supportive and motivating. The people in JP Morgan are very encouraging and helpful. My team specially was very positive, helpful and understanding. We regularly went for drinks on the floor, either for someone’s promotion, or internal mobility or just general socials organized by the human resources. The senior management was approachable and honest about their careers and work.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I must appreciate the human resources and the summer internship panel of JP Morgan, to have done such a wonderful job in organizing this internship. It is one of the most well-structured and organized internship I have ever had. The trainings done were really relevant for our jobs and day-to-day activities inside the firm. Apart from trainings, we had senior management meetings and speaker series, in which we shared space with the most senior members of the firm, including the CEO This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions. The networking socials organized were well-planned and organized and gave everyone opportunity to communicate with other interns/analysts from every line of businesses inside EMEA.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • As I mentioned, there were multiple trainings organized for all the interns across lines of businesses. These trainings were really helpful in the daily tasks on the floor and also day-to-day functioning of the team. Not just the trainings, but senior management speaker series was really great. It gave us exposure to the very senior personnel in the firm, we got to know their career paths, there choices and does and don't to reach the position they are in.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Being in this organization for 10 weeks has definitely prepared me for the corporate world on a global scale. In a firm of this huge size like JP Morgan, it can be difficult for anyone to feel insecure, but the great part of this organization is that the people are so great that it is difficult to feel insecure despite the size of the firm. I would definitely come and work full time for JP Morgan.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement Î÷¹ÏÊÓƵs/colleagues?
  • Yes, we had a lot of opportunity to network and interact with other interns and analysts in the firm. These events were called socials, where all the interns for London office gathered and had fun. It was not just interns in our line of business, but also interns from across the firm in multiple areas and businesses. We regularly went for drinks on the floor, either for someone’s promotion, or internal mobility or just general socials organized by the human resources.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I worked in Canary wharf, the area where all the multi-national firms and corporate offices of London are located. It was easily accessible from the Tube, bus and over-ground train. Although, having so many corporate offices make it a little less affordable place to stay, but some of the interns also stayed in the area surrounding canary wharf like Westferry, Mile end or Shadwell. Around Canary wharf, a 1BHK rental is around 1200 pound per month.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • As I mentioned earlier, I worked in canary wharf, which is an area of major corporate offices, multi-national firms and global banks. Because of all these offices, there are amazing places to dine, specializing in multiple cuisines. You will find many fast food chains to eat as well, fine dining’s, restaurants, pubs to chill. There are retail food chains as well, from where you can pick up frozen food or quick snacks.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes, there are many things to do around canary wharf. There are many tennis courts where you can rent one court for 2 people for 5 pounds per hour. You also have sand volley ball courts, where our team used to go few times to play. You have golf-course, inside badminton court and squash courts.
