The Role
Thoroughly enjoyed the internship and all opportunities offered to me during the 10 weeks.
I was given a large degree of control and autonomy on an important technology transformation project despite limited earlier experience which made my time here feel valued towards the teams I was directly supporting. Other team colleagues also had some problems they asked for my input to help resolve, felt welcomed and valued by the entire team.
Wide support network within the team, manager and recruitment team. I had everything thoroughly explained at the start of the internship and was never dropped into the deep end. There were always opportunities to ask questions if I was confused about new concepts. There was also a wide range of online training and support made available to interns which answered many of the initial questions that arose.
Typical hours 8am-6pm, good amount of work of work to complete during that time, sometimes my main project was a little quiet but I was able to take on some support roles for my team to fill my time. There were also plenty of opportunities to get involved in other activities such as the J.P. Morgan charity corporate challenge.
As mentioned, I was given a great deal of responsibility in my main project and often left to complete analysis, liaisons with tech support and reporting by myself. Despite this, there was always contact available to me if I needed any help or clarification for anything. However, the relative autonomy of my work gave me the opportunity to critically think in order to solve problems, rather than relying to a team member or manager to simply provide all the solutions.
The training provided (Excel & various other financial training) was extremely relevant to the career I wish to pursue and a number of the university modules I have and will be taking. The skills I picked up such as communication style (written and spoken) as well as effective analysis and reporting will be invaluable in any role I join.
The Company
The office had a fun and friendly atmosphere, teammates were happy to chat about their time and experiences within the firm as well as offer support and advice. I was invited to a number of team related socials and activities and felt very welcome from the first day. Managers always had an open door policy for questions.
There was a great deal of organisation and thought put into the internship program. Finance interns were given weekly talks by either leading managers within the company or current employees providing useful insights into both how the company was run and what we might expect in a regular job. There was plenty of training throughout and interns were placed into teams that had interesting and relevant tasks for them to do.
There was a great deal of investment into all the interns. Managers often took significant time out of their schedules to attend networking events to help better connect the interns to wider teams. Furthermore, many regular employees gave time for interns to drop shadow their roles or set up 1 to 1 meetings about what they do in their team.

The next stage would be the graduate programme and details of how to apply and what it would involve have been well explained throughout. This would be a three year job with yearly rotations in different teams, allowing interns to decide which area of the business they feel most suited to. The prospects seem very appealing and recruiters seem happy to sponsor individuals for the programme if they perform well during the internship.
The Culture
The team invited me on a number of social events and I felt involved in everything happening. All the other interns seemed happy to network and socialise regularly, helping to make the job more enjoyable whilst making new friends. In addition, the company organised 5 large social events during the internship with all expenses prepaid.
AWorking in London the cost of living is naturally high, however, J.P. Morgan provided each intern with £1000 to go towards travel costs and living expenses during the program. I was lucky being able to live and commute from home (near High Barnet) but this still cost me roughly £300 each month as well as a 1 hour 15 minutes commute daily. Social costs are generally higher than other parts of the country but this is generally expected when taking a job in London. Due to the internship only being for the 10 weeks of summer, most people were happy to pay the price of regularly socialising and getting to know people in that time.
The nightlife around London is second to none, this is balanced by its expensive nature as mentioned before. The area of the main J.P. Morgan office for investment banking (Canary Wharf) has a number of nearby bars and restaurants within close proximity, whilst the waterfront and The City, Leicester Square, Shoreditch and Chelsea are all a short tube journey away and have fairly limitless opportunities.
The company has a number of different activities you can get involved in outside of regular work. These include various joinable charitable opportunities and internal support groups all designed to allow employees to impact the internal and wider community in a positive way. There are also sports groups that are always happy to take on new joiners. Often the onus is on you to find out about and apply to join these different activities but there are plenty of opportunities out there to get involved with.
