The Role
~I really enjoyed my placement- the people in the company are very nice and always want to help you. The learning I received was very in depth and helped me learn about the job very quickly. The working say was very good, always with things to do, and the socials they put on are a really good way to find other interns and make friends.
My colleagues were very welcoming and always want to help. I felt like I could ask any question and they would explain it to me so it's easy to understand, but they also knew that I was a fast learner so gave me lots of data to work with and see what I could work out from it. They valued my ideas and made it easy for me to voice my opinions. They created a fun environment to work in, and I felt that I was not treated like an intern but like a full employee.
I felt like I could ask any question and they would explain it to me so it's easy to understand, but they also knew that I was a fast learner so gave me lots of data to work with and see what I could work out from it. Even high managers such as MDs are there to help, and I feel like they really want to shape you into doing well in the company- they are not setting you up to fail at all. I would always ask if things were wrong, and they would tell me truthfully and give constructive criticism if necessary, or tell me what I'm doing well at too.
The daily work was quite constant, but I was also part of many projects that made the working day different each day which was interesting. The projects I had were quite demanding which is good as it keeps you focussed throughout the day with no worry of slacking. From when I started in the morning and when I finished in the evening I was pretty much busy, including meetings and talks with other colleagues in different teams.
Due to lack of access it was difficult, but I was given more responsibility than I thought I would with analysis, including using applications such as excel to efficiently portray data, and export the data from internal sources to provide in meetings and for other projects. My managers helped me with things to do for this as I was not always sure, which was a really big help.
You gather very good team-working skills in a fast paced environment where learning is key. I had to learn things that I had never learned before in a short space of time, which shows how adaptive you can be in a working environment. Having a full time job also keeps you in a routine for when you go back to university, getting the most out of your days and be focused enough to try and get the best grade you can.
The Company
The atmosphere is like any other office- however we have lots of facilities that can be used throughout the day, and your working day tends to be flexible depending on your manager. Everyone in the office loves their job too, which I think is a very big factor in the atmosphere of an office.
The placement itself was set up, as we had lots of socials and corporate responsibility days, with other talks dotted throughout the 10 week internship with senior partners in the firm. We also had lots of networking events which is key when trying to get onto the analyst job afterwards, which were really interesting and beneficial.
We had 2 days of personal training about the firm before we even started- with modules to learn so you have the basics of economics and how investment banks work. They really made sure that everyone was doing okay- with mid internship reviews and weekly drop in sessions with the recruiters which you can voice any issues you have. Easy access to the recruiters was also available in a personal messenger where you could ask them whatever queries you had about the internship. The company really want you to succeed in securing a grad job which makes you feel wanted in a company.

I would really like to stay employed with JPM, as the analyst programme seems to be very good with rotations to different teams to give you a feel of what you would like to do as a full time analyst. They love their employees and make sure everyone is okay in their job role, along with managers that want to help you along the way to succeed.
The Culture
We had socials at different intervals in the internship, where free food and drink were provided to meet fellow interns and other analysts to make friends, as many people are not local from London and have moved down for the internship which is nice.
London is quite expensive but I live at home. If you find the right places to go it doesn't have to be too expensive, and the JPM intern socials are paid for which is good. Going out with team members after is good, and there are many cheaper places that people go to in canary wharf.
Nightlife in London is always very good, but can be quite expensive. As around Canary wharf there is not many club, but there are many bars that people can go to around there. More central in London is where the big clubs are (as Canary Wharf is East London).
Activities out side of work were not really my area, but there are many football teams you can join in and they have the JPM corporate 5k run which everyone gets involved in which is really good. It includes corporations from all over London and is a really good evening.
