About You
J.P. Morgan is and has always been my favourite firm and hence I had lot of expectations. Luckily, none of these lead to me being left disappointed. I had a great experience, learned a lot and made lots of new friends. I became hands-on insights into what it is like to be a financial analyst and this is exactly what I wanted!
I new that I would not always feel valued by my coworkers as I would by my parents. Of course, I informed myself about firms, such as J.P. Morgan, and hence also knew about how human resources is handled. So me not having felt valued all the time was not a problem specific to my placement, but is rather general thing.
Despite my previous answer, I always received enough guidance to solve any tasks. Creative freedom and different approaches were definitely valued. However, expectation management was valued too, so goals were always to be reached, and this was communicated very clearly. But once I figured out how to cope with delivering good results, I could focus more on actually learning which made my internship extremely valuable.
The skills I learned are definitely valuabe for my later career. Basically, I lowered entry barriers to nearly zero for this specific industry, not because I know everything but rather because I know how people think and act and above all because I have an overview and know how to acquire skills fast. The skill to get skills is invaluable.
The Company
My internship was structured well. I was responsible for a fixed amount of projects at the same time and expectations were clear. Besides, there events for interns were organised on a regular basis. Even though, my work times were not fixed and I even had to do something for an MD on the weekend, the structure and organisation was top-notch.
The atmosphere was quite competitive as you would expect from an internship at a prestigious investment bank. Everyone was trying to show leadership during group tasks which is a bit ridiculous in my opinion. Nevertheless, everyone was not arrogant or anything like that. We all networked with each other and I made some friends which I’ll probably stay longer in contact with.
"The company did invest in all of us which resulted in a very positive experience. There were very useful tasks and everything was so well prepared that it created the overall good experience. I was surprised by how much we were valued as ‘spring interns’ and I could definitely improve some of my skills.
I have always wanted to go into investment banking and this internship only strengthened my endeavour to do so. I love the financial industry and the rewards for working at a prestigious investment bank. I cannot wait do finally graduate and pursue a career. The presentations about the company, seeing employees in action etc. were all helpful to get a good feeling of the company.
The company culture is very competitive but the employees are still friendly to pass their knowledge on to others. I have talked to many employees and networked so that I will have better chances to get a job at the company later. However, the positive side effect was that I gained a really good taste for the company culture
Everything Else
Yes, for sure! Anyone who thinks about going into finance will love this internship and will broaden your horizon. Furthermore, you can build great relationships and build up your network. It will be only interesting for people who plan to pursue a career in finance but it is still a great opportunity to meet motivated individuals.
