About You
I really enjoyed the week as it was an opportunity to see the type of work that goes on a day to day basis within an investment bank. As much as you hear from others and read online, to be able to actually speak to and see what goes on was very helpful in breaking some commonly held misconceptions about working in investment banks as well as the type of people who work there, who in my experience, were throughly welcoming and open to talk to and interact with.
Throughout the week I felt valued due to how well the program was structured and we always had something to go to or a talk to attend. This made us all feel valued by the firm as we were able to interact with people from a very senior level within the company which showed us that they truly wanted us all to genuinely get a lot from the events. I also felt the enthusiasm of all involved in the organization of the week helped the interns feel more valued as well
Throughout the insight I was able to receive lots of guidance and support. Due to the nature of the week, there were numerous networking sessions and the chance to ask questions and ask whatever we wanted to know to people within the firm. We also had guidance in terms of the application process, and tips of what to do and what to avoid in the application process going forward in the future when applying to JP Morgan for internships and jobs.
The Company
The insight was incredibly well structured, with there being a very busy day every day of the insight which meant we were able to gain a huge amount of knowledge and information despite the relatively short amount of time that we were there for. We also had a wide variety of events, from presentations from seniors, to networking events, to work shadowing which also ensured that the insight was as beneficial as possible due to the wide exposure we were able to get.
Overall, the insight had a very welcoming atmosphere. Throughout the organizers were always enthusiastic and very effective in involving everyone in the activities. Also, all the people in the organisation we spoke to was always willing to give up their time to speak to us and give advice even if they had work to do. This was very helpful for us to see the general culture of the campus environment which really stood out to me.
This was one of the best parts of the insight for me, being able to speak to people who were already on the graduate program and they experiences they have had was a particularly useful experience. We could also speak to people in different lines of business to see how their experiences had differed from others, and the advice that everyone provided was really useful for me to see how the graduate program at JP Morgan was structured and how progression at the firm can be achieved.
The insight was useful for me to see the culture of the company simply due to how many people within the firm I was able to speak to. Throughout the talks the common theme was about how welcoming everyone was and how they were willing to work with those who worked hard and were willing to go above and beyond they daily role to excel in whatever it was they were involved in. The culture of mobility within JP Morgan was also something which seemed to stand out to me.
Everything Else
There were plenty of chances throughout the week to network and speak to employees at various stages of their careers at JP Morgan. The chance to ask the same question to different people and get different perspectives on issue was something I found particularly useful for me in getting an insight about how different people within the firm have progressed and how their experiences have differed.
Throughout the week there was frequent mention of employee run groups in all sorts of different areas of interest which people are encouraged to get involved in, which spread across a number a different areas. It was also said that getting involved in activities outside of ones daily job is encouraged in order to help aide ones development within the firm and help develop a wider network which will always be useful.
I would recommend this insight to a friend because of how it helped develop a relatively strong understanding of the work which goes on within the operations department of an investment bank despite being there for only a few days. It was also an eye opening experience in terms of debunking some of the myths I had heard about investment banks by actually speaking to people who were in the industry and could speak from experience about their work and how it all fits together within the bank.
