About You
The Spring into Operations Programme in Bournemouth was incredibly enjoyable. It gave me the opportunity to interact with a vast number of Operations employees- ranging from interns to ED's, and it was very interesting to learn about the different roles within Operations.
During the week I definitely felt valued, as if I were a member of staff. The atmosphere in the office was far more relaxed than expected and everyone I spoke to was very honest & open about their experience of the company and willing to answer any questions I had.
The week consisted of a series of workshops relating to, but not limited to: building a personal brand, networking, presentation skills, CV tips and assessment centre tips. The mock group exercise for the assessment centre was very useful, as was the end presentation, as we were given personal feedback of our strengths & weaknesses.
The information received was invaluable, not only for assisting with internship applications and interviews but also to further our skills in the workplace. CV's are crucial throughout our careers and so having advice from such a reputable company will definitely aid my progression. Additionally, the presentation tips will definitely help me improve my skills during my degree and for the future.
The Company
The insight was very well structured - it's amazing how much was packed into 3 days! Skills sessions, work shadowing, talks from various members of staff about their job role as well as learning more about J.P. Morgan and the Operations division.
Overall the atmosphere was very friendly and relaxed and everyone was very willing to talk about every aspect of their career. Most of the Spring Week attendees were provided accommodation and so we bonded over Breakfast as well as through the socials organised for the Spring Week. The Treasure Hunt on the 2nd day really gave us a flavour of what a fanatastic town Bournemouth is.
The wide variety of skills sessions and personal feedback received definitely gave me a better idea of my skill set, which will help me tailor myself to future applications as well as aiding personal development.
The workshadowing experience on the first day was a fantastic way to get a sense of what a full time role at the company is really like. Though working at such a company is demanding, the opportunities on offer are incredible as the company permits mobility between different sub-divisions, divisions and even across the globe!
The company culture certainly promotes a friendly and supportive working environment. It is a very dynamic workplace and so every employee needs to be adaptable, however the collaborative environment which places their clients as their focus really promoted the "first class business, in a first class way" ethos of the company.
Personally the week inspired me to want to pursue a career in Operations as the back/middle office positioning of the division appealed to me. If you are the type of person who is open-minded to various career options and willing to get a vast range of experience in different roles, rather than just progressing along one specific career ladder, then apply to this programme!
Everything Else
Hotel accommodation & rail travel was covered by the company. Definitely received a lot more free food & drinks than expected!
There were many opportunities to network with employees at various stages of their career & company hierarchy. For example, the networking opportunities ranged from work shadowing interns to speed networking (10 min rotations with senior staff). The week was very much what you make of it, so come prepared with some questions in mind and a willingness to learn and really take advantage of the networking opportunities on offer!
The social event on the first night only consisted of Spring Week attendees, so the opportunities to network were very much during the day (though there were many opprtunities). However, this meant that over the course of 4 days we very much bonded with one another and the event was very enjoyable.
The company focuses a lot on opportunities outside of the office, for example sports teams & volunteering. It very much felt as if the employees want to give back to the local community and there are a wide range of initiatives in place.
I would definitely recommend this insight week to a friend. It will give you an invaluable experience of networking with a wide range of employees, as well as very much developing your own skill set. It is a very fun & informative programme.
