About You
Had an unbelievable experience: a really positive insight, not only into the Operations division, but the culture of J.P. Morgan as an organisation.
Excellent communication from the HR representatives, as well as honest, open discussions with senior staff and recent graduates alike. We really were welcomed by everyone we had the good fortune to meet.
Being an insight week, there was always guidance and support, which made it an informative and complete learning experience.
In terms of help with degree studies, it was made clear that it was transferable skills rather than a specific degree, that J.P. Morgan is looking for. In terms of 'beyond', the week was immensely helpful for discovering which area of banking and operations I would like to work in.
The Company
The insight was definitely seamless; there wasn't a moment when I was unsure as to what we were meant to be doing and everything ran on time. This was mainly due to the excellent communication between HR and us. That said, I was often wanting to finish our breaks for lunch sooner, to avoid some standing around.
Atmosphere from JPM was very professional, but welcoming at the same time. Most of the spring interns shared a willingness to get involved and learn.
I certainly developed my personal understanding of operations, J.P. Morgan and banking as whole. Most importantly, it allowed my to develop a personal view of where I would like to fit in the bank, and how that role affects the whole organisation (it was obviously an insight, rather than professional training). The fact that we had the opportunity to speak to not only recent grads, but also associates, VPs, EDs and an MD speaks volumes about how much J.P. Morgan invests in spring interns.
A strong emphasis of the whole time at JPM was the culture of the organisation as a whole, and what it is like to have a day-to-day position. We spoke to grads from a variety of areas, we were given a tour and we had the freedom of eating in the canteen alongside current employees.
The culture is that of a professional, American bank, and this was reflected throughout the week. There was not a single person we spoke to who didn't speak highly of J.P. Morgan, which was reflected in the fact that most of those who were higher up the company have been there for the majority of their career. Mobility is also promoted at JPM, and most of those professionals we spoke to have been given opportunities in many areas and in different countries.
This reinforced my goal to work in operations, and was an eye-opener to the skills, roles and responsibilities of such a position. We were exposed to complex terminology, and the nitty gritty of ops, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Based on the insight, I will definitely be applying to an internship at J.P. Morgan.
Everything Else
We were provided with excellent accommodation in a convenient location, as well as generous breakfasts, lunches and dinner at the social event. The 'aparthotel' had everything I needed and more, and my commute involved a 30 second walk to the DLR, an 11 minute train journey, and a 30 second walk at the other end to the office. I was given a train ticket covering zones 1 and 2 for my three days.
Networking was absolutely huge throughout the insight, and was put at the forefront of the experience. We were given networking tips and advice, and ample opportunity to put them into practice with employees at all different times in their careers. Speed-networking was a highlight of my time at JPM.
There was a social event for all the spring interns, which was put on by J.P. Morgan. It enable us to meet each other in a more relaxed setting, which allowed colleagues to become friends. This was really important since it was essentially networking with like-minded individuals who I may come across again in my career.
For example, one graduate sitting on the grad and intern panel spoke of a netball team, and another mentioned a football team, amongst others. This was music to my ears, since I am a keen sportsman myself. I initially found it somewhat amusing that there is a football league amongst other banks and organisations, but having explored more of the team-orientated culture around JPM it was no surprise.
I would definitely recommend this insight to a friend. It was a thoroughly educational insight which met my expectations and beyond.
