About You
I enjoyed the insight a great deal. What I enjoyed the most were the networking opportunities and the group case project supervised by a JP Morgan IBD analyst mentor. However, the insight was a bit disappointing when we were told that there would be no fast track for the summer internship. I also think there was too much time spent sitting with your allocated team of 6 for the whole day everyday and too little opportunities to get to know the spring interns outside of your group of 6.
I felt very valued during my time at JP Morgan. Many bankers took their time to deliver presentations to us and took care in answering our questions succinctly and clearly. I also very much appreciated the fact that JP Morgan hired external expert consultants from Fitch Learning to improve our commercial awareness and presentation skills.
I received plenty of support and guidance from our case studies project mentor; I am very impressed by Andre-Francois de Boccard in his great skill in explaining the case’s complexities in an easy way and to help us see the bigger picture and to truly understand all of the case’s important elements. I also appreciated the support from Fitch learning and HR’s support to answer all enquiries we have about the programme.
The skills I developed from the case study will assist me a lot in my degree studies and beyond. In fact, I am currently working on a hypothetical M&A transaction pitch for one of my courses and I am using a lot of the structure and key elements from this case study to help me building up this presentation.
The Company
The insight was overall well structured. It had presentations delivered by senior bankers, skills sessions, networking sessions, case studies and social events. I think there was too much weight put onto the presentations delivered by senior bankers and it would have been more helpful to allocate more time into networking opportunities.
The general atmosphere was overall very good. Spring interns got along very well in their allocated group of 6, however there was not as much of a strong spring interns bonding community as I would have liked; there were too few opportunities for spring interns to get to know each other outside their allocated group of 6. The atmosphere was also a bit competitive and slightly depressing from the very first day when we were told that there is no fast track this year, and that not everyone in the spring class would be getting a fast track. Other than that however, the case study, networking and presentations provided for an overall good warm atmosphere. HR could have maybe been a bit more engaging with the spring interns early on, it felt that there was somewhat of a small wall between spring interns and HR.
The firm invested a great deal into us. JP Morgan arranged for external expert consultants from Fitch Learning to come in and deliver brilliant lecture pitches to help us significantly increase our presentation and commercial awareness skills. Our case studies IBD analyst mentor, Andre-Francois de Boccard, also contributed to our personal training by teaching us effective presentation skills.
Given that there was no work shadowing, it gave us somewhat a limited insight. We did get to meet JP Morgan employees through networking sessions, the case study and through the presentations delivered by senior bankers. So we did get a good feel for the culture and the type of people we would be working in, as well as what the work would involve (thanks to the case study). But work shadowing opportunities would have given us a much better insight on what it would be like to work here full time.
The insight helped me a lot in understanding the company culture given that there were networking events where I had the opportunity to talk to a multitude of bankers across several teams. For the case study we spent a lot of time with our mentor to get to know about his positive experiences at JP Morgan and to understand the culture better. The company culture is generally a very friendly and helpful one. But the most valuable aspect is that at JP Morgan, you really get rewarded for showing motivation and willingness to learn. Many analysts, associates and even VPs will spend a great deal of time meeting you, advising you and giving you helpful tips on the recruitment process if you show that you are interested and reach out for help.
Very valuable. The case study was exciting and fun, and the mentor made it even more interesting by helping us see the bigger picture of this and similar M&A transactions. The presentations by senior bankers on the different products and teams inside the bank also helped us in making a more informed choice on our future career path.
Everything Else
We received canteen cards with 10 pounds of credit for lunch everyday, as well as free breakfast and dinner during the social networking event at the bat & ball. JP Morgan also paid for our hotel and our return Eurostar train tickets. On top of that we were provided with a London underground metro card that enabled us to travel around London freely by public transport for the entire spring week.
Yes, we had 2 networking opportunities to meet other employees at JP Morgan. One was a junior bankers networking event that lasted approximately 1,5 hours, and the other was a senior banker networking event that lasted 40 minutes. These events were very helpful, though I would have appreciated to have more networking events and/or longer events. There was also a networking event with last year’s spring interns at the very end of the spring week programme which was also helpful, though it may have been better to schedule that event a bit earlier than at the very end, as many of the spring interns were by then very exhausted from the case study presentation, which was right before this networking event.
The social event opportunities allowed the spring interns to thoroughly get to know each other as well as the recruitment team. The networking opportunities allowed for us spring interns to make valuable connections with potential future colleagues in banking. There was one social event at the bat and ball and helped us get to know other spring week interns and HR in a much more relaxed environment and helped us feel closer as a team.
Yes, during the presentation sessions we learned about several activities that employees can get involved with outside of work. At JP Morgan every employee gets the opportunity to spend some time each year on a charitable activity or to promote green energy. I think this is an effective way for employees to make a meaningful impact to society without neglecting their job.
I most certainly would recommend this insight to a friend. The insight programme definitely provides a great first step impression into banking to learn about the bank and various career paths. However, I think I would more strongly recommend this insight if there was the opportunity to get fast tracked without reapplying to JP Morgan, especially since many other competing Investment banks such as Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, Citi etc. offer fast track opportunities very soon after the spring week has ended. The insight is also a great way for networking and to make connections with potential future colleagues.
