About You
I really liked the experience of having an insight in the investment banking industry under the tutelage of J.P Morgan. I believe that the organization was very good and that the activities that we had throughout the week were very diversified and interesting. I specially enjoyed the shadowing as I was able to really discover the areas that interested me the most within the firm. However, I think that there are some points that could be improved for next year. The presentation skills session was very funny and useful but it was a bit too long taking into account the fact that we were tired and needed to finish our projects for friday. A shorter and more concise presentation would have been better in my opinion. Finally I think that a bit more of shadowing in more areas would be very useful for the next spring week participants in order to have a better understanding of the firm and a clearer idea of what they really would like to do in the future.
I believe that J.P Morgan valued my stay in the firm since the beginning. The fact of covering all the costs related to my spring week says a lot about that. Not all the firms are willing to pay so much just to have some young Î÷¹ÏÊÓƵs getting to know how they work. Moreover, I would like to highlight the willingness to help of the HR employees, that were always there to solve any doubt or any query. Finally, I was quite impressed about how the employees ambraced me during my two shadowing rotations. Everybody was kind with me and they were all happy to answer my questions even though they were very busy. A spanish sales representative that had studied in Esade even invited me to a morning meeting with all his team but I couldn´t go for compliance reasons.
To be honest, I didn't have any idea about investment banking when I arrived the first day to the J.P Morgan offices. When I left on friday, I knew about how researchers work to make predictions on the market, about how sales representatives allocated the best finantial products to the most suitable clients or how structurers would create a collar in order to reduce as much as they could the risk of default for the client and the firm. I learned so much during this week and I totally fell in love with this sector thanks to the guidance and support that was given to me throughout the week. I can only thank J.P Morgan for this amazing opportunity and once in a life experience. I wish I could learn so much at ESADE,,
I'm currently studying finantial market mathematics at Esade. Before coming to this spring week I wouldn't understand very well the theory of this difficult subject. It was a mess for me to understand basic notions like discounting, hedging or calling. Now that I have gone through all these notions during my spring week everything that I have studied in class makes sense and it will be much easier for me to study for my final exam. Moreover, I'm starting to like studying this subject whereas before I didn't like it at all because I couldn't put this theory in practice.
The Company
I believe it was pretty well structures although we had a very packed schedule with little time to rest. I would have loved to have some more time to network with the employees that I met during the week. Indeed, some of them had proposed me to have a coffee during the week with them but I couldn´t find any time to do it because of my schedule. However, in general I think that we had a very wide range of activities that allowed us to learn a lot and very quickly and we also had the possibility meet and network with very experienced people that guided us in the industry.
What I liked the most during this week was the incredible atmosphere that we constantly could feel. Not only the employees were open and friendly, but also the other participants I got to know where very cool. I was very sad of leaving on friday because I had made very good friends during the week. When the HR girls told us on monday that the week was going to go by very quickly I wouldn´t have imagined that it would be so fast. Time flew for me because I had so much fun. And I had fun because of the general atmosphere of the insight.
As I said before, the company invested a lot of ressources for us so we could make the most out of our insight weeks. I believe that the information sessions developped a lot our understaning of the firm, specially thanks to the activites that followed the sessions. Finally, the shadowing sessions trained me personally as I was alone in a desk of 40 talented people that helped me out with all the doubts and questions that I had.
I think that the insight week doesn´t really give you a perfect image of what would be our job in the future in the firm because it's very general and its main goal is to give us a broad idea on how the firm works and what is done within its different divisions. However, it made me understand what I wanted to do in this firm and that's what I value the most of this week.
I think that I understood generally the culture of J.P Morgan throughout this week. Even if it has a more traditional and formal management style, all the employees that I encountered enjoyed their time in their workplace because they fitted in the company culture of delivering the best products and services to their clients in order to keep the best reputation of the market, while adding value to these latter. They all wanted to reach the excellence in their jobs and that's something I really care about in my life.
I had many doubts before coming about my suitability in this sector. We all heard stories about it saying that people don't have social lives and that they spend their whole lives at the office. That was one of the questions that I would ask the most during the insight programme because I care a lot about my weel being and my work life balance. All the employees that I encountered told me that even if you have to spend a lot of hours at work, they really enjoyed their jobs because they felt that they were doing what they really loved. Indeed, the passion that I felt while talking to them has made me decide to consider seriously starting my professional career in the sector,
Everything Else
As I said before, I believe that J.P Morgan invested a lot of money on me because the firm believes in my potential and I can only thank them for the opportunity. Not everyody has the means to pay a stay in London during a week and I think that the firm makes a beautiful sign of generosity to us.
There were a lot of opportunities of networking during the week, not only with my colleagues but also with employees of the firm, often holding a very important role. I was actually very impressed about having the chance of meeting MDs during the lunch of wednesday as they are very busy and not all the firms would be willing to "waste" their time with some young Î÷¹ÏÊÓƵs.
They were very intense a we had to meet as many people as we could in order to have a better understanding of their jobs. However I liked them very much as there were plenty of them and they alllowed many to find answers to the thousands of questions I had before coming. I really learned a lot during the networking sessions. Moreover, the social events with the rest of participants were very well organized and I had so much fun after a long day in the office. That's when I really made good friends.
I know that there was a gym for employees in order to keep fit after their long work journeys but I didn´t reallty find out about more actvities.
Absolutely. Even if the person is not interested in finance I would recommend him to go as it's a life experience to get an insight with such a an important and big firm. Apart from that, the people I met were amazing and independently of getting the offer for the summer internship or not, I will always stay in touch with them.
