About You
I really enjoyed the insight week. It was really interactive with an exciting group project that allowed us to really get a feel of what goes on in the Investment Banking Division. There were also many opportunities to get to know the other people on the programme, as well as employees at all levels of the bank, which was hugely interesting.
I felt very valued during the Spring Week. J. P. Morgan made it clear that the wide variety of skills possessed by the attendees of the programme were all valuable. This was particularly pleasing for me, as I had worried that my non-finance-related degree would carry less value. At the networking events, employees of all levels seemed truly interested in speaking to us and advising us on our careers, as well as answering any questions.
There was an excellent level of support throughout the week. When undertaking work for our group project, we were supervised by an experienced group mentor from the Investment Banking Division. Our mentor supported us throughout the week, while also giving us the opportunity to think for ourselves.
The various presentations we received were extremely informative. I came in with very little idea of what exactly goes on in the bank, and now have a far greater understanding of what each division does and where I think I would be the best fit. Furthermore, particular skill workshops were very valuable, giving us the opportunity to develop skills that will be of relevance in any career.
The Company
Every day of the programme was very well structured. At the start of the week we were given a timetable, so we knew what we would be doing at all times. The presentations we received were given in a very practical order, which gave structure to our understanding of the bank.
The atmosphere was excellent and there was honestly never a dull moment. Everyone we spoke to, both in the presentations and in the networking events, was extremely enthusiastic and this created a really positive atmosphere. The employees at all levels of the firm were friendly and approachable, and this gave a good impression of the firm's atmosphere as a whole.
There was a great deal of investment in terms of personal training and development. A series of workshops were given which focused on developing professional skills that will be very valuable as we look to enter the workplace. This clearly showed that the firm cared about our personal and professional development.
Having entered the programme with little idea of what it would be like to work in investment banking, I now have a far greater understanding. The presentations from the different departments clearly laid out what they do on a day to day basis, as well as giving a more long-term view of what happens in the department. The people we spoke to did not gloss over the inevitable difficulties of a career in banking, such as the long hours, and this honesty was greatly appreciated.
The insight programme gave me a good understanding of the company culture. The presentations and the people I spoke to at networking events highlighted the firm's strong emphasis on talent, and the opportunities for mobility within the firm for those displaying talent. The value placed on integrity also shone through.
I came into the programme looking to decide if a career in investment banking was definitely for me. Not only did the programme confirm this, but it also helped me to narrow down the exact divisions that would best fit my skill set. This was a result of presentations on what each division does, as well as the opportunity to network with individuals from across the bank.
Everything Else
J. P. Morgan will provide free accommodation near Canary Wharf for those who live outside London, as well as covering all travel costs including flights. A good breakfast and lunch were provided every day, as well as dinner on certain nights when social events were taking place in the evening.
Yes, we had a number of afternoon teas with employees of the firm. These came from all departments of the bank, and from all levels from Junior Analysts to Managing Directors. This provided a great opportunity to find out more about the different jobs available, and to ask any questions. The employees were very friendly and approachable, and I feel that I would now be able to get in touch with them again should I have any further questions.
There were a number of networking events with employees during the day, including a number of afternoon teas throughout the week. The atmosphere during these events was relaxed, which made it easy to engage in conversation with even the more senior bankers without feeling intimidated. There were also social events in the evenings just for attendees of the programme, which provided a great opportunity to get to know our peers.
I would definitely recommend this insight programme to a friend. I learnt so much in terms of technical knowledge about investment banking, and in terms of soft skills that will be relevant to any career. I also had a really enjoyable week and met a lot of wonderful, like-minded people who I am sure I will stay in touch with. I am now sure that banking is the career for me, and have a better understanding of where in the firm I would like to work.
