    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The 6 weeks, or rather 5 weeks of actual office time, were really enjoyable. I felt like I played a key role in a variety of different tasks, from what one might imagine as the more typical 'intern' type jobs - correcting grammar and spelling in a report - to far more complicated data analysis and mathematical calculations. (My internship was in the pensions team so involved a lot of actuarial work). It feels great following a piece of work to be copied into an email from a senior associate or manager to the client in which they display your work.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I definitely felt valued by all of the colleagues who I undertook work for but even those who I did not often come into contact with on a regular basis (managers, directors etc) would often stop and ask me how i was getting on, what kind of work I was doing, whether I was enjoying it. In terms of some of the smaller jobs I had to do, the more experienced members of the team are greatly appreciative that you are there to do those tasks they might view as arduous.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Over the 5 weeks of office time I had 5 meetings with a 'people manager' who discussed with me my overall objectives from the internship - both what I wanted to achieve and what the team expected of me -and then how I could improve/develop in order to meet or exceed those objectives. However not only was it this designated person who would give guidance but anyone on the team. Admittedly I would often have a multitude of questions because the material was so new to me but everyone was willing to take a few minutes to explain.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • A lot busier than I expected to be - going into the internship I almost expected to just be given the jobs that other people didn't want to do but it was not like that at all. I often worked with senior assocoiates in writing reports or organising data/charts/graphs that would go into the final product. Being completely new to a lot of these jobs meant I was constantly busy, however I do think this depends on which Line of Service you are in. Some other interns have often had days at a time of being very quiet. Fortunately this was not the case for me.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a lot more responsibility than I thought I would be! Of course everything that you do will be checked by someone higher up and then probably checked again by a manager before it is finalised and so you are unlikely to produce something completely orginal that goes to a client but in terms of the type of work being done there is a lot of responsibility and deadlines to meet as a team. There were a number of occasions where I was asked in the afternoon to get something completed by the end of the day and while this can create some pressure, it is greatly rewarding.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The skills I developed will greatly help me. The technical skills I have been introduced to will no doubt be useful should I choose to become an actuary in the future but arguably more importantly the ability to get things done within a set time-scale and to communicate with people in a professional environment will be useful no matter what I decide to do in the future. The ability to shadow colleagues in high positions as they attend client meetings also allowed me to appreciate how business is conducted and the right way to go about doing things in a professional manner.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere was great and very friendly. Despite the fact that the team was often under pressure to achieve a goal within tight time frame, it was nice to be involved in an amicable work environment where everyone worked to help each other get a job done. The team would also often undertake social activities like weekly 5 a side football, cricket nets, pub lunches and I also got to take part in an annual Away Day involving a trip away and an overnight stay. Such events helped to build a strong team ethos and a friendly atmosphere.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was very well organised as you would probably expect from a place like PwC who go through the process of 100s of interns every year. Communication with the recruitment team before the internship started was fantastic and they were always easy to get hold of - I was abroad for the 6 months leading up to my internship but they still contactable by email and would reply very promptly to any queries. On top of this, any events or hoops that needed to be jumped through were clearly explained and brought to our attention whenever they needed doing,

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very appealing, there seems to be a number of varying opportunities within PwC. Socially the office is a great place to be with frequent activites to meet the majority of interests. From a professional perspective, a lot of assisance is given to those who need to study for a qualification and due to global nature of the firm it is relatively easy to do things such as international secondment around the world in places like Australia or Malaysia.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement 西瓜视频s/colleagues?
  • There was a really good social scene amongst both the members of my team whose ages varied from 20-late 40s and also amongst the various other interns who were often in other roles or lines of service. The group of interns would often meet for lunch and go out for drinks/meals on a Friday night after work. As for the team, we would have a pub lunch once a week and undertake activities such as 5 a side football etc.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Being from Coventry and working in the Birmingham office it was easy enough for me to stay at home and commute every day on a 20 minute train - in this respect I didn't really get to learn much about the cost of living in Birmingham. However socialising within the area was not too bad and of course much cheaper than places like London. Birmingham has a large 西瓜视频 population as it is and so there are plenty of places that cater for young interns.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Birmingham is a large city with large universities and a huge 西瓜视频 presence and so there are lots of things to do in the evening. There are plenty of bars, restaurants and clubs within walking distance of the office or likely a bus/taxi journey from any accommodation you might have in the city. The Bullring is a huge shopping centre where there is always something going on and places like Broad Street cater for some of those later nights out.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • PwC ran a programme called 'Dragon's Den' during my internship whereby interns were challenged to come up with a solution to a certain problem. In my intake it was do with helping to overcome some of the problems with the NHS. This activity was great and really created a sense of teamwork amongst people who previously did not know each other. The best ideas at the end of the programme were presented to a board in 'Dragons Den' style and a winner was chosen.
