The Role
I really enjoyed my summer internship as there was such a variety of things that I was given the opportunity to do. I worked with 3 different clients in a variety of locations so the job never got boring. There was also a really good social side to the placement as many events such as after work drinks were organised to allow us to network with other interns and employees. The three days of training at Staverton Park were also good because they gave everybody the chance to meet other interns from all over the country.
Even though it was just an internship, I felt really valued by my colleagues. The people are definitely the best thing about PwC because everybody was really friendly and they all wanted to help. They didn't just give us boring administrative jobs to do, we were properly integrated into the team and doing different sections of the audit. Even senior partners wanted to talk to the interns to find out more about our lives and to find out what we thought about the work we were doing. Everybody genuinely wanted to know your opinion.
I study languages at university so I was nervous that I would be unable to do the work that was given to me. However, from the first day everybody kept emphasising the fact that no question was a stupid question. I was talked through every piece of work that I was given to do and allowed to ask as many questions as I needed to. Asking questions didn't make me feel stupid because PwC emphasise that every year should help and tutor the year below them so everybody asks questions.
I was never left with nothing to do at work but I was never too busy to go home on time. This may vary between different clients and offices etc. and I expect that you would have to work longer hours after graduation but I found it was the perfect balance for me. We were also given some elearns etc. that we had to complete over the course of the placement so if we ever ran out of things to do we could just work on those.
I was responsible for completing two whole sections of the audit and it was my responsibility to manage my time accordingly. I was very surprised at the amount of work they let us do as interns but I was pleased because it gave me an insight into what the job would actually be like in the future. All in all I was happy with the amount of responsibility that I was given.
I feel like I developed a lot of different skills. I think that the skills I developed will be more useful for me when I graduate rather than in my degree studies as my degree is so different to working at PwC. However, some skills such as people skills are transferrable to all aspects of life. Working in a professional environment also definitely provides you with a lot of experience that makes you much more employable.
The Company
The atmosphere varied between clients but the atmosphere amongst the team was always good. We often had the radio on while we worked and nobody frowned at you for having a fun conversation to break the day up a bit. I think that the general atmosphere was periods of hard work followed by short breaks when everybody would chat etc.
I would say that the internship was really well set up e.g. the training at Staverton Park included meals every day and the itinerary was packed. The only thing that I think could have been improved was the fact that a lot of us were placed at client sites quite far from where we lived which meant we had very long days. However, I think that the travelling was worth it because I really enjoyed my time at the client site.
We had a week of training at the start of the internship (3 days of which were at a hotel) and then we were constantly trained on the job. There was no point when the learning stopped. The firm invested an unbelievable amount of money into the internship e.g. they even organised a Dragons' Den programme to make it more interactive and enjoyable.

I am hoping to receive a job offer when I finish my placement soon.
The Culture
There were lots of social activities that you could participate in e.g. football teams, netball teams, sports days, fundraising events and meals/drinks. I was surprised that there were so many things that you could do but I think that might be partly because there are lots of people similar in age to you who have similar interests to you. This means that there is always something for everybody.
Manchester is not particularly expensive but it isn't really cheap either.
Manchester's nightlife is good but I was living at home so I was quite far away from the centre.
