The Role
I have really enjoyed my internship at PwC. I have been exposed to a really wide range of projects that have been taking place. I have been given a certain extent of responsibility from day 1 that has really helped me to get engaged in the internship. Despite not having much knowledge of the line of service that I was in, the people I was working with understood this and made sure they took time to explain everything, so the time I spent wasn't wasted and I was able to learn as I went along.
All my colleagues in the team I was working in made me feel valued. From the new graduates all the way up to the directors, everyone made me feel included in the team from day 1. Everyone arranged to go for lunch together so I had the opportunity to meet the team on an informal basis too and they made sure I was invited to everything. I was given opportunities to do pieces of work for a range of different people and also to shadow them to different kinds of meetings from the beginning so I never felt like I was in the way because they used me to make sure I was of value.
I was assigned a 'buddy', who was in the team I was placed with and was a more informal form of contact for me. He contacted me a few days before the internship started so I knew he was there to ask any questions that I may have felt were silly questions and didn't want to ask the more senior members of the team. I was also given a 'people manager', who was the go-to person for the more business related queries, such as managing my objectives, work load etc. They both gave me loads of time and made sure I was supported the whole way through and made my feel like I knew who to go to for what from day 1.
For 90% of my internship I was finding myself really busy on a daily basis! Being a summer internship, it did mean there were a number of staff away on annual leave on their holidays so at times the office was a bit quieter and the work load fell a bit. That said, a couple of emails or speaking to some other people to request work soon sorted this and I had a healthy to do list again. Although I was busy on a daily basis, this was to a nice extent. I still worked to my normal hours and wasn't expected to put in riduculous overtime, people were understanding when capacity for work was low.
At the beginning of my internship I had very limited knowledge for the work, therefore I wasn't given responsibility, but that didn't mean I didn't have stuff to do. I was given lower responsibilty tasks - a lot of which involved research, which benefitted me as it meant I was learning as I was working. As I spent more time in the team the amount of responsibility I was given increased and I was given tasks such as emails and letters to clients or other companies. The responsibilty I was given was always suitable and backed up by support and briefing from my colleagues so I never felt like it was unreasonable, but I never felt like I was being treated like a child either.
The skills I have developed are skills that I am able to carry forward to any professional situations in the future, having seen and used them in a work enviornment. I have also built on my knowledge to understand specific details of the area my internship was in, which has helped me make more educated decisions in terms of module choices for my final year of University. Some of the training I've received whilst on my internship feels as though I am in a better position for graduate jobs and thinking about more of a career path as a result.
The Company
The atmosphere in the whole office was really friendly. Simple things like people saying 'morning' when you get in the lifts on your first few days of work and people asking your plans for lunch make the experience must less intimidating. Each of the teams were very friendly and sitting in a group of people where people are interested in talking to you and you can ask anyone questions made the atmosphere very productive. Breakout areas with hot drinks facilities meant catch ups regarding work were able to take place without disrupting other colleagues. The whole atmosphere was friendly which made it much easier to sit down and work but also to ask any questions I needed to.
Most aspects of the internship set up were very organised. We started with a three day residential induction followed by a two day local office induction, which although felt like it was a bit long, it meant the interns were able to meet each other and learn about each others experiences, which was definitely beneficial when going into the office environment as we had people to meet in a similar position. The only but of the internship that wasn't as organised was the information about the exact teams that we would be joining, until we got to the induction.
There was a great deal of training and development opportunities available to us as interns on a firm wide level. Specifically the team I was in gave me a variety of training and learning opportunities that helped with me personal development. My people manager helped me to set my objectives which ensured there was an element of focus on training and development throughout my internship.

Very appealing - having spent six weeks here I would love to come back. Having been made so welcome and made to feel like a valuable member of the team, I would really like to have a career here. The atmosphere of the whole organisation as well as my team made me feel a career here would be an enjoyable experience and a long term decision that I would be suited to after an introduction to it.
The Culture
Having met all the interns at our induction we were able to meet up for lunches and arrange after work drinks together which was really good to hear what others in a similar position were getting up to. We would be able to talk on the firm's instant messaging system and could ask each other for advice. Some of my colleagues really emphasised the importance of a social scene when you join and begin work and I definitely feel I was able to experience this on my internship.
Being in London the costs of socialising, living and travel were relatively high. That said, the salary from the internship could go towards travel and socialising costs. I felt that as my internship was in London most people were aware of these high costs and it meant just picking and choosing when socialising was possible. But I didn't feel like any of us missed out on socialising because of the costs.
There were lots of opportunities for activities outside of work - in my first week I was invitied to the netball league, some external talks and networking events and a number of team drinks and socials. Everyone was really kind and invited me to anything they thought might be of interest. Sports activities to after work socials, there was everything available and if you made it known you were interested then there was nothing stopping you!
