The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed the internship. It gave a great insight into what Assurance was like on a day to day basis. As well as an understanding of the type of work culture PwC has.
Everybody in the office was friendly, and through out the internship we were all well looked after by Human Resources, those running the programme and people in the offices.
Upon starting the placement I was given a people manager and a "buddy". They were both welcoming and made me feel comfortable around the office. On jobs I was well instructed on what I should be doing, and offered help whenever I struggled.
Depending on the job it could be different. One job consisted of a lot of meetings, so it seemed like I wasn't really contributing. However it just became clear that's what some jobs can be like. Other jobs I was doing tasks regularly throughout the day. I was never given typically seen internship tasks of photocopying lots of papers, people seemed to not want to just palm off their mediocre tasks that they didn't want to do on you.
I was given increasingly more responsibility throughout the internship. Carrying out tasks essential to the jobs progression, but there was always someone to help if you struggled.
I think the placement will teach me to have more confidence. And has increased my networking skills. It's given me a good understanding of a possible career path as well. My computer skills were also improved.
The Company
The atmosphere was friendly and welcoming. Everybody was easy going, whilst also getting their work done. It felt easy to fit in and make friends.
The training week was very well organised, you were given essential information and knowledge. The length of the placement also gives you enough time to get a feel for the different areas of assurance too. I was given a range of jobs, and never stuck in the office doing little tasks.
The company invested a lot of time and money into everybody's training. We were provided with training days away to get an understanding of what assurance was about. And throughout the six weeks, you were constantly learning. They emphasise having objectives for development, and your people manager is there to help you achieve those objectives.
I think future employment prospects are incredibly appealing with PwC. It has a great work culture and all interns were really well looked after. Personally I have my fingers crossed for a job offer at the end.
The Culture
With only 3 interns within the office it was harder to have a social scene just within ourselves, although we all made good friends. The office was a very friendly place, with people going out for lunches on certain days, and any social activities we were all invited to.
The placement was in Newcastle, where the cost of living and socialising is relatively low.
The nightlife is one of the best in the country.
There are sports teams it is easy to get involved with. As well as other social events.
