The Role
The internship was tremendously interesting. I gained a lot of knowledge in how Audits are made, and gained a lot of Networking opportunities along the way. A personal highlight for me was being able to take part in a Dragon's Den style project where you submit ideas that the company may actually then take and pitch to its clients.
You learn to work in tight teams. During your internship you get very close with your designated Senior Associate. They are the person who sets you your work, so you get to be very close to them.
You are designated a buddy and people manager who look after you during your internship. They are always avaliable for a chat if you have any problems or queries about the quality of your work or your workload. They are also always there to ensure you get the most out your internship by supporting you through the process.
The work load varies considerably; my first couple of days I worked at least 9 hours. However this cycles as othre days I have pretty much nothing to do due to the complexity of the tasks being given to qualified members of the team rather than myself.
The work I was given is that which an associate would do. This means that you are given a lot of responsibility in your work as you could be doing work someone who has worked at the firm for 3 years would be doing. Of course your work is checked by a manager before it is submitted to the client though - so not too much pressure if you make mistakes!
Its the little things you pick up on the job that makes a big difference. Mostly, I picked up lots of tricks in Excel to accomplish tasks so much faster than you would without training. Additionally, you get real first-hand knowledge of how Audits are planned, controlled, tested, and completed. This, acoompnied by the training given on the firm's unique software empowers you to get a real insight into what Accountants do on a day to day basis.
The Company
People were chatty but there was a heavy focus on the work at hand. I got very close to the other interns in my intake and my tutors but none of us really branched out much further.
You can tell PwC takes interns regularly. The first 3 days all the interns in the country were sent off to Northampton for training together so you get to meet interns from all around the country not just your office. The training they offer is relevant, consise, and fun!
The company's training is second to none. All the tutors were very passionate and made training fly by thanks to the engaging approach they take to training. You also get a lot of opportunities to network within the firm which they encourage heavily, which is of course great for personal development!
They heavily suggest that your ultimate goal from the internship is to offer you a greaduate position. They explain to you just how to do this. Deliver your daily tasks with enthusiam and passion, while meeting your objectives and there's a good chance PwC will offer you a graduate position.
The Culture
We formed a Facebook and WhatsApp group, which allowed us to develop a budding social scene. This covered drinks after work, to nights out, to casual cinema trips and bowling on weekends. There really was something for everyone.
Working in London is expensive. Fact. But to embrace the social aspect, you will spend money. This covers anything from London priced drinks to Oyster card travel on your daily commute. The one perk of the job though is that if you're put on a client site, PwC will settle your expenses, including up to 拢40 on food a day.
London offres something for everyone. You can get from London Bridge to anywhere in London very quickly and that of course opens up doors to all kinds of Nighlife opportunities.
The activities outside work were run by interns alone. PwC didn't really put on any activities out the workplace, which is surprising considering they focus heavily ont their social groups, when selling the company.
