The Role
The PwC Internship is a great opportunity to understand the firm, its global outlook and its broad range of clients. The internships offer exposure to all of these aspects and the company are very keen to tailor every individual internship to meet the interests of the intern. For example, if you are keen to work on a manufacturing client's audit, the firm will do everything possible to give you that experience. At the same time, they've pooled their knowledge from previous years to make sure that every intern is given as broad an experience as possible. I've had a great time on my internship, building a trusted network of colleagues and fellow interns and hope to return to the firm in the future.
PwC are very keen to give interns as authentic an experience as possible. As such, interns normally take on the work of a first-year associate (training is provided to help you achieve these responsibilities) and audit teams are very keen to see interns in the same way. I've always felt I could approach my colleagues without hesitation, all of my colleagues have offered me valuable feedback and I have kept in touch with many of those I worked with during the course of other audit work.
There is a week long induction programme provided by PwC UK which brings all of the interns together to learn about the firm and the work we will be conducting during the internship. This is paired with the option of eLearning courses to improve your technical abilities and one-to-one meetings with supervisors and colleagues when interns need additional guidance.
Although there were a few quiet days, these were mainly due to client workloads and requests for data. On the most part, I was kept busy on every day of my internship and I would stress that the work does not consist of making coffee, photocopying, etc.
During our training week, we were led to expect minimal responsibility. Although this has been the case for some interns, the firm are more than happy to give interns additional responsibilities if they feel up to it and are keen. I have been given a much greater amount of responsibility than I expected and I have enjoyed the challenge.
There are many skills one can take away from a PwC Internship. First and foremost, Assurance interns take away valuable knowledge of accounting practice and auditing. These are crucial if one is to rejoin the firm or a competitor in the future as a trainee accountant and, for those studying Accountancy degrees, can lead to much greater technical knowledge when going into your final year. The firm also provides training in people skills, presentation skills and career development skills, all of which are helpful throughout one's career.
The Company
The Edinburgh office is a great place to work - in fact, it was recently voted Scotland's best office to work in. Everyone is very friendly, the office runs a hot-desking system so you can learn something new everyday from the people you find yourself sitting next to and PwC also have a comprehensive series of social and sporting activities which interns can choose to get involved in. There's also end of the month drinks which bring the whole office together.
I can't fault the internship setup. The recruitment track is, by far, the quickest of all of the Big Four accountancy firms (I'd received my offer from PwC before the others had even contacted me to arrange a telephone interview) and the recruitment team stay in touch with interns in the run up to the start of your internship to make sure you're kept informed of what awaits you.
There's a huge amount of investment in the training of interns at PwC. Not only is there a week long training programme, there are also eLearning courses, catch-up meetings with recruitment, a People Manager system for feedback and more. You will never feel alone while working at PwC.

There are many options for progression within PwC, however, interns should make sure that they apply for the office and line of service they hope to secure a graduate job in as the PwC Internship programme runs a strict transfer process which can, if you're unlucky or ill-prepared, lead to you missing out on a job.
The Culture
As a group of interns, we chose to stay in touch and create our own social scene with weekly dinners, etc. PwC do invest in some social events with first and second year graduates to integrate interns into the firm and there are also end of the month office parties in some offices.
The cost of living and socialising in Edinburgh is relatively high, however, it is cheaper than London and offers many of the same facilities.
I don't participate in Nightlife so can't answer this question.
Absolutely! There are social and sports groups run within each office at PwC and there are also some national PwC events (such as Ride the Nation), etc which interns can participate in if they are keen. Interns are also welcome to suggest and get involved in the planning of further activities.
