    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The team I was part of were great and I was involved in a wide variety of project. I also had the opportunity to work with a wide array of people from all different levels within the firm which provided me with an excellent opportunity to see what was expect at each level and to get a good feel for the organisation as a whole. Some pieces of work were very exciting and other were a bit dull, howver overall there was a good balance and I also felt engaged in what I was doing.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt well valued by my colleagues and was treated as though I was a starting associate. I felt that the work I was doing was making a meaningful contribution to the overall projects I was working on. The teams I was working on were always supportive in giving me credit for the work I had completed and for giving me praise if the work I had done was of a good enough standard to warrant it.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • The people I was working with were all very supportive and friendly, always willing to help out whenever I was unsure of something or simply had a question. In addition PwC has a very good feedback process whereby you are always informed about how you performed on a project and potential areas for improvement. This was very helpful as it helped me ensure I was approaching my work properly, it also allowed me to adapt my approach as I went along to ensure that I was able to meet my expectations. I never felt lost or if I did I never felt as though I couldn't ask for help.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The amount of work I had was very cyclical, therefore there were some days when I was extremely busy however there were others were I had a lot less work. I certainly felt as though I was busier than some of my fellow interns however this is likely due to the service line and department you are in as well as how busy your team is at the time of your internship. Despite this there is never a moment when you were not doing anything. If your team didn't have anything for you to do there were always some intern specific projects or work you had to do, in addition you were always able to ask different teams for addtional work. Overall, it is not really busy every day however there is always a comfortable amount of work to get done (again this probably varies over service lines/departments/teams/time).

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Over the placement I was treated as though I was a starting associate. Therefore, I was never given any really important, high level, theoretical stuff (I was an intern). However, I was also not given only technical, mechanical jobs such as excel . I was given a lot of responsibilty over the work I was given and there was a lot of responsibility on managing myown time and how much work I decided to take on. There was certainly not someone standing over you all the time making sure you didn't make a mistake however your work was always reviewed before it went out. I'd say you were given responsibility with in reasonable boundaries. You didn't have to much respnsibilty over the specific work you had but you did have responsibility for finding work and making sure you could deliver it on time.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • If you eventually get the job I'd say it will put you at a considerable advantage to your peers who have not come through the internship as you will have familiarity with how the company works and the systems and software they use (which can take some time to work out). With regard to my degree it will be particularly helpful, the technical training will make certain assignments easier and the inside perspective will help when it comes to giving real life practical answers in exams. In additon, the internship helps you learn how to work as part of a large team and utilise the resources you have in order to get the best return or result. The internship will provide you with technical as well as behavioural skills that will help you get a job somewhere else if you so wish but also how to be more efficient and effective when studying for your degree.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere was very welcoming. It was generally a very pleasant environment to work in. People worked hard and were focused on doing there work however they weren't so busy that they wouldn't stop to help you or have a chat. Everyone takes there work seriously but not to seriously that they aren't willing to have a bit of fun now and then.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Very well! It was as good and professional as you would expect from such a large organisation that runs these programmes every year. You were always aware of what was going on both in your team and with regards to the overall internship. There was also weekly web seminars that kept you up to date with what was going on in the wider internship programme and any activities or work you are expected to complete as part of your internship. There were also plenty of people running the programme who you could turn to if you had any questions. All the activities set up by the internship organisers ran very well. The projects you were part of were also well organised and you were aware by the internal calander and email system where you were expected to be and any appointments you had coming up were clearly flagged.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • As part of your internship you receive both general and technical training. At the start of the programme you do a 2 day offsite where you meet fellow interns and learn about the general work environement at the company and any basic essential information you need to know. The offsite also provides you with technical training at the offsite in relation to your choosen area, this techical training is continued when you go to your place of work. Throughout the internship there was also plenty of training put on by the individual teams in order to teach you how to use specific software or more knowledge based training on the background information that is required to carry out the job successfully. You are also given a laptop for the duration of your internship and the comapny has weekly web seminars that help you to develop skills that will help you during your internship. In addition if you get the job at the end of the internship the company will pay and help you through your professional examinations.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • They make it clear at the start of your internship that if you perform well you will be offered a place on their graduate programme which is a real bonus. They also clearly outline what is expected of you in order to acheive that goal. If you are looking at long-term career prospects then there is a clear path up the organisation and there is even criteria that is laid out that shows you the skill and competecies you are expected to have in order to be promoted. They also provide a rough time frame by which you can see how long it takes to get to each step.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement 西瓜视频s/colleagues?
  • Among the fellow interns there were plenty of social activities, some put on by the company and some that were organised amongst the interns. People were generally up for meeting up after work and going out. In addition, there was social events among colleagues. With my team we went for lunches and dinner as well as go-karting. The company also has events on throughout the internship that give you the opportunity to socialise with other interns or more senior members of the organisation. There are also functions that are put on that give you the opportunity to learn more about different areas of the company and get a better understanding of all the different activities you can get involved in.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • My internhip was in London which is certainly one of the more expensive places to live and go out in. You do get paid slighlty more for an internship in London as a result of the higher living costs. The general cost of living during the internship was definitely more expensive than what I would expect to pay if I was to move down full time. I stayed in 西瓜视频 halls of residence and they charge higher prices during the summer period to reflect increased demand. I wouldn't say that it was to expensive that you couldn't still go out and socialise however it isn't quite as cheap as going out back at university.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I would say London has one of the best night life's in the UK. There was plenty to do round about the area I worked no matter what your interests are. You could find something exciting to do every night however I would caution that many of the activities are expensive. Despite this there was plenty to do around my area that didn't involve spending money there are numerous art galleries and museums you could visit as well as street acts. There are also some events that are put on that don't involve any money, for example down from where I worked there was a big screen showing sporting events where we went to watch Wimbledon. For night time there are plenty of clubs and bars that you can go to as well as gigs or shows. However again these cost however there are clubs that showcase music in a variety of genres or styles so there is certainly something for everyone.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes, the company has an online social networking system that has numerous different groups that outlines different activities you can get involved in outside of work regardless of your interests. In addition there are also activities within the team you work that don't involve work. For example my team ran a team triatholon for charity. I would say that if you are interested in activities outside of work there are plenty of people within the company that organise events as well as staff discounts for certain events or sporting activities. The company also encourages employees to get involved in external activities and are willing to support staff in doing so.
