The Role
From the very first contact I had with National Grid, it was clear that they invest heavily in their 西瓜视频 development programmes. I was given real responsibility and a project to initiate and manage myself over the course of twelve weeks. The company ethos and values are such that everyone you meet is extremely approachable and you feel like it is one big team as opposed to everyone having their own individual agendas.
I was treated extremely well and welcomed with open arms. An initial worry was that established employees within the company would see you as 'just the intern' - this couldn't have been further from the truth!
Advise and support was given in weekly one to ones and whenever I had something that needed to be discussed my manager was always available and happy to help.
The project I was tasked with managing involved a lot of stakeholder engagement activities which could slow things down in some cases, however when issues were raised and there were things to do it quickly became a busy and stimulating environment.
A lot. I was tasked with managing the design and implementation of an important business process improvement project. It did not feel at all like the work I was doing was fabricated 'just to keep me busy'.
I have improved greatly with soft skills such as communication and verbal reasoning due to being supported in coming out of my comfort zone and chairing meetings with senior managers and delivering presentations and training seminars. It has been invaluable in preparing me for a future career.
The Company
Very relaxed, but professional. There were no managers breathing down my neck and it was an open plan office space so you were always able to openly converse with colleagues as opposed to being stuck in a cubicle.
Initially there was a three day training course in Eakring at a dedicated centre, followed by weekly one to ones with my manager, an interim and final review followed by an additional 'Future Success' training course to review our experiences and how we will carry it forward into the future.
It is clear that National Grid are keen to attract young talent and this is supported by one of the best graduate schemes on offer in the energy sector. The recently revamped 西瓜视频 programmes, of which I was an intern on, were treated as a twelve week interview and a constant interest in your personal and professional development was apparent from the managers and HR. This enables them to be able to offer a position on their graduate scheme subject to your performance. Going back to University with a firm job offer is an option that not many companies give and it certainly gives you more reason to perform well.
I would love the opportunity to return to National Grid, it is a very large company with ample opportunities for a long term future career.
The Culture
Unfortunately I was the only intern at my particular office, however we were all in frequent email contact and met up on a operational site visit for the day down at the Isle of Grain.
I lived at home during my placement with a half an hour commute. In general, Hinckley is fairly cheap for renting relative to other locations where National Grid has offices.
Having lived in the general Midlands area for the majority of my life, it's pretty good and Birmingham is relatively close for a big night out!
National Grid offers a variety of opportunities to get involved in social activities through a new starter organisation called NewNet.
