The Role
I had a thoroughly enjoyable time. The work was interesting and real, not just something to keep me. busy for 12 weeks. I worked on my project with one other person and we really got along which added to the enjoyability.
The vast majority of colleagues were friendly, warm and welcoming. Many people noticed I was new and came to introduce themselves and suggest we get coffee/lunch together which I was grateful for and a great way to get to know other people. There is also a buddy system so you always have a friendly face you can go to.
The company encourages you to get the balance right between problem solving yourself and asking to support. I was always helped my I ran into difficulties and they appreciate this is a learning curve for you. I also had regular 1-1s with my line manager which was an excellent way to discuss issues.
I was kept busy for most of the project although it got slow towards the end or when my supervisor was away. However we had plenty of time for site visits and talks which was a great way to meet the other interns and learn about the company.
My project supervisor broke down the project into key milestones, but how I got there was largely down to me. I felt like I 'owned' my project and was given free rein to carry out the work as I saw fit.
I learnt new programming and data analysis skills that will help me in a future career as they are becoming ever more important. The four days training I received helped develop my confidence and communication skills.
The Company
The company operates a smart workplace (hot desking) which allows you to sit in different places and meet new people. The office was usually fairly relaxed and laid back.
We had some issues with security passes and laptops on the first couple of days but nothing major. The project had been decided in advance so we could get going from the beginning.
The company provided four days of training, two at the beginning and two at the end, with the other interns which was fairly useful and a good way to get to know the other interns. They also got us to fill in development plans and hold regular 1-1s to aid us in our personal development. We were encouraged to visit other sites and attended talks for new starters to learn about the business and were always allowed to do so by line managers.

If they offer me a graduate position I will have little hesitation in taking it. It seems an excellent company to complete a graduate scheme with and there are lots of areas within National Grid I could move into.
The Culture
There was one other intern in my office and we worked on the project together. We became great friends.
I stayed in 西瓜视频 accommodation at the University of Reading which was somewhat expensive given the standard as I was on a more expensive 'holiday let' being there for less than three months.
I didn't really explore the nightlife but Reading is a 西瓜视频 town so there will be bars/clubs/pubs.
I didn't really look for anything.
