The Role
Working for National Grid on placement has been a fantastic opportunity and I have really enjoyed my time here.
My colleagues have made me very valued, one of the key things for me was that I feel like an actual employee of National Grid not just "on placement".
The support umbrella here at National Grid is excellent, I had regular weekly meetings with my line manager each week to discuss what happened last week and key priorities for this week. Moreover I feel that I can approach anybody here in my department for help and support, even the senior managers are very open and help support you.
The work balance suited me fine, I had enough work to get on with but wasn't too bombarded with work that I wouldn't be able to complete it or the quality would suffer. I feel that if i was falling short in work load I can easily speak to my line manager or senior manager to identify what projects are available for me to get involved in and most importantly they would be happy to accomodate.
As previously discussed I feel like an actual full time employee of National Grid, the responsibility given, in my role, has been high. A couple of examples I can give is that I have completed work that goes up to the top senior managers, I have completed work with a global aspect (UK & US) regularly interfacing with US colleagues and also I have been given responsibility to run an entire sourcing event from start to finish, from producing the documents required to regularly interfacing with stakeholders and suppliers. This project is still on going but I will be getting involved in supplier negotiations, negotiating the contract and ultimately signing the contract with the winning supplier.
My personal opinion on training is that we gain an adequate amount, you usually go on a 2 day course in "Eakring" which is for personal development, this is manadatory. Usually it is up to your department what extra training you receive to do your job, I feel that if i asked for extra training my department would be able to accomodate this as long as there was a need for the training.
The Company
The atmosphere within the office and the team is warm and friendly, not too say its a 'holiday camp'. We get all of our work done whilst socialising together through the day.
The placement was very well organised, I had a couple of emails from my line manager before my start date to ensure everything was alright and to give me further details. Furthermore my department held a welcome day for the new graduates and the placement 西瓜视频 (me), this was a great insight into my department and enabled me to pre meet my team and my line manager. In this day I also had discussions on what I will be doing on placement.
The company has already invested in you by providing a salary for the placement year, extra investement will come from the training you will receive in Eakring and also the coaching that is given to you by management/senior management. Personally the coaching and development within my department has been the most valuable development to me, the management hope that after your placement you will want to come back on the graduate scheme within their department which is why they are willing to put their time and effort in.

Nothing is certain... however I hope from the investement my department has made in me and the responsibilities I have been given I can prove my worth when applying for the graduate scheme. I hear the convertion rate between placement 西瓜视频 and graduate is usually high. If you choose to come back into your department you had your placement with you're more likely to have a chance of being accepted.
The Culture
Yes.
I lived at home for placement year as I only live 30mins away so am unable to comment,
Only living 30mins away I can say the nightlife is good, working in Warwick most 西瓜视频s live in Leamington Spa area which is close to Birmingham, Coventry and the nights out within Leamington Spa.
Yes, my team usually has an outing at least once a month to socialise which is a great way to know your colleagues better. Moreover when our Vice President comes over from the U.S we usually organise an evening out with him and the team, again a great opportunity to network especially with the VP. Additionally you can always suggest ideas to the team and if suitable hopefully they will be up for it. Finally National Grid has a support organisation called newnet which is for new starters, they regularly organise work events, site visits, senior leader talks etc. Newnet is fantastic to get involved with!
