The Role
The internship was very enjoyable throughout. It was great to have a 3 day training induction with all of the other interns at an external venue. I found the work I did was very interesting, and this was partly due to the fact that I was continually being challenged so none of the days seemed to drag.
The colleagues I worked with were very forward in offering positive feedback immediately after I had completed a piece of work well. This was very encouraging and definitely made me feel valued. It is expected that all interns will carry out important pieces of work which is valued by the company and by their clients.
There was a large amount of support available to me during my internship. During the internship I was assigned a buddy who was a recent graduate. My buddy was available to address any small queries I had and to help settle me into the company. On top of this, I was assigned a people manager whose role was to help me set objectives and continually challenge me. Both my buddy and people manager would have weekly communication with me and would also be available at other times if I needed their support.
For the majority of the placement, I was kept very busy with the one project I was assigned to. After my initial induction, it took a couple of days to be put onto a project, but from then onwards there was always work available for me to do throughout my internship.
As with most new jobs, I was initially given a relatively small amount of responsibility but this soon grew after I had successfully completed my first couple of tasks. By the end of the internship, I was leading small areas of work and holding individual meetings with members of the client company without the attendence of any other colleagues.
The initial training we received was very good in giving interns a grounding in the company and the company's procedures, but it did not cover any technical content. I would say that the majority of the skills I picked up were people based skills, focused around my interaction with clients rather than technically based skills. These will definitely be beneficial at university when I am doing group based activities.
The Company
This is not the easiest to answer because the majority of my time was spent on the client's site. When I was working in the office, there was always a friendly atmosphere but the only problem was that most of the other staff would also be on client site and therefore the office would often seem empty.
Every step of the internship was very well organised. The company's recruitment staff were very prompt in replying to my questions and would always provide information about upcoming deadlines well in advance.
The majority of the training took place during the 3 day induction training. On top of this however, my people manager would identify areas in which I could improve. If I had been a permanent employee, I would have been eligible to attend training courses which would have helped me improve in my weak areas.

At the end of my placement, I had an evaluation meeting with my people manager where I discussed my performance over the internship. This session went well and I was subsequently offered a graduate position after uni.
The Culture
All of the interns based in my office were very sociable and we would always organise to meet up at least once a week after work.
I worked in my university city which meant that I could live in my uni accommodation over the summer instead of having to find alternative accommodation. Bristol however is not the cheapest city, although this was not a big issue due to being paid a reasonably competitive wage.
Bristol is very good for its nightlife, and I knew the nightlife very well due to being at university.
There were a number of sports clubs that were open to employees outside of work. As a new employee I was made to feel very welcome in joining any of these clubs.
