Overview
My daily work is completed on a computer, and mainly consisted of writing code using Python. I would either be writing simulations to conduct research, or developing software tools. I attended a couple of meetings per week to keep up to date with progress.
Skills
I've gained technical skills such as coding, developing software collaboratively and knowledge about particle accelerators. I have also developed soft skills like communication, managing my time, taking initiative, working as a team and critical thinking.
Responsibilities
Since much of my work revolved around a research project started by my manager, I had a lot of control over the progress of the project and I was left to manage my time appropriately.
Support & Guidance
Both my direct line manager and other members of the department were good at making sure I always felt comfortable to ask for help and guidance. I had weekly 1-to-1s with my manager.
Culture
The culture was friendly, with an open-door policy. People were always open for a chat at break times, but likewise you were free to keep to yourself if you wanted. There were weekly coffee mornings and other social events to foster a good work environment. I felt that there was a good atmosphere throughout my placement.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed this placement and think it will be very useful for me in the future. I felt like I was working on a real project which will benefit people. I had the opportunity to learn a lot and get involved in opportunities which interested me. I felt supported, and didn't feel overwhelmed by the workload.
Yes
Working here is perfect for someone who likes solving problems and working on big projects, so make sure your application shows that you're intelligent, creative and curious. It also helps to have good communication and teamwork skills and experience with coding is very helpful for a lot of roles.
