Overview
Working in the office every day alongside a designated supervisor. Completing tasks given by that supervisor, and occasionally other members of the team. Tasks vary depending on your seat. For example, in my real estate seat, I was asked to draft a commercial lease and some ancillary documents, and produce a piece of research on perpetuities in relation to a historic lease.
Skills
Absolutely. Working in real estate allowed me to develop my contract drafting skills, which include core skills like attention to detail. In my disputes seat, I was able to develop my analysis and critical thinking skills through working on a research task in relation to a live dispute. The experience also helped me develop my social skills, as there was a lot of networking, events, team meetings, coffees and other interactions.
Business Insight
It was very interesting getting to know more about how HSF Kramer is run as a business, including its key areas of development, such as AI, and its recent expansion into the US legal market. Learning about this has made me consider where I see myself in 5-10 years.
Culture
The company is great. People are extremely friendly and supportive. Having said that, it is not a place where people will hold your hand. We are expected to pick things up fast and produce work to a high standard. This is a place for incredibly competent and confident people.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed the experience. I found it challenging but in an invigorating sort of way - I found that I was incredibly focused and driven and I was proud of the work I produced. I really enjoyed all the extra social activities and the chance it gave me to get to know fellow vac schemers and other HSF Kramer employees.
Yes
Try to relax and be friendly. But most importantly, make sure the work is of a good standard - ask clarificatory questions if necessary, and talk to your supervisor and trainee buddy!
